RATHER STAYS HOME; EXECUTIVES SPLIT; MOONVES LOOKS TOWARDS FUTURE

*Exclusive**

CBSNEWS veteran Don Hewitt called Dan Rather's disappearance from Monday's Evening News "really stupid" during a damage control meeting on Monday, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

One top source inside the CBS Broadcast Center claimed Rather was told to stay off the air on Monday, as a form of punishment!

Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer was called in to anchor the damaged ship.

CBS staffers were shocked Monday when CBS president Les Moonves suddenly tied Rather's upcoming resignation to the phony document flap, a departure from CBS's official storyline.

Moonves explained in a memo: "Dan Rather has already apologized for the segment and taken responsibility for his part in the broadcast. He voluntarily moved to set a date to step down from the CBS EVENING NEWS in March of 2005... after examining the report and thinking about its implications, we believe any further action would not be appropriate."

I am a loving, kind, sensitive, and forgiving man. And thinking about all the things Dan Rather has accomplished in his career, I feel...no sympathy.

Dan Rather follows in his communist predecesors foot steps.

Say good night Walter. Say good night Dan.

Maybe they should show him sitting in the corner facing the wall somewhere in the background as a part of the live broadcast.

I don't want Rather's scalp. He's of more use to us sitting in that anchor chair forever tainted.

I DO want an apology..for the President. The one thing CBS will never do.

Infighting. I wasn't aware of this particular nuance.

Meanwhile, Mapes is officially defending the documents as authentic.

Tom's gone, Dan's soon to be gone. If we can just get that damned Canadian off the air, life will be good.....

Well, I do want to know whether he was hiding (which I suspect) or given a mandatory day off as Drudge suggests.

The former reflects very badly on the man of "Courage" and the latter looks like damage control from CBS.

Mapes is a rabid Bush hater....and she will come out swinging for what CBS just did to her.

This is going to get real juicy.

Look for Dan to disappear earlier than the March time frame. (Then again who would know...)

The woman being interviewed on O'Reily tonight didn't mince words. She said simply, Mapes is a liar.

Mapes is going to be the darling of the Hollywood-Michael Moore set.

I would be a week's pay that she's already booked on the lib lecture circuit, she's got a book AND movie deal in the works :-(

Well she is a martyr, after all.

I don't visit DU, but I am wondering why we don't have a DU Funnies update on this.

Considering how firmly he publicly backed the story, it must be real embarrassing for Dan Rather to hear how damning the cover-up report was about him and his fellow sloppy journalists.

Hanity today was right on in that the report totally ignored the political bias aspect and focused on sloppy journalism. Which if you investigate the tagline I am using will show how ironic this whole TANG forged document flap is. Dan Rather has lectured journalists on correct procedure regarding stories (see tag line) and yet when cornered he said that CBS had done everything right and stood by the Story. He knew better and lied to the public destroying his credibility to try to take down George W Bush.

Let me make the tagline link a little easier

I like how the report credited the perfect journalistic storm as including the fact that their seasoned anchor backed the story and that is why CBS goofed.

Yes, Dan you belong in the woodshed.

Congratulations to Mat Drudge, less bias, more accuracy and many days faster with the news that people need.

You mean the pistol brought in by the "frog with side pockets"?
