Band's version of one-time Presley tune hits sour note with some
MADISON, Wis. - As if the incoming Legislature didn't have enough problems, a high school band's rendition of a tune that was an Elvis Presley hit decades ago drew a complaint from a newly elected member of the Senate.
The Richland Center High School band played "An American Trilogy" at the Senate's inaugural ceremony at the Capitol Monday - the first day of a session expected to be dominated by battles over budget-cutting, a tax-freeze amendment and a myriad of other issues.
Sen. Spencer Coggs (D), who is black, said he was SHOCKED, as were his family and other guests, to hear the strains of the Southern anthem "Dixie" played in the Senate chamber as part of the trilogy, along with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "All My Trials."
Coggs, a Democrat from Milwaukee, complained in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center.
"Whether the slight was intentional or not, the selection was not appropriate," he wrote, noting that "Dixie" is often associated with slavery.
"While now it should be unnecessary to suggest, in the future a list of songs should be submitted prior to a performance and the list should be reviewed for its appropriateness," he said. "It is unfortunate that this special day was marred by such an unnecessary event."
Schultz had invited the band and choir to play at the ceremony.
He said the complaint caught him by surprise.
"A simple apology is what's needed," Schultz said, "and I will certainly be happy to do that."
He said he wasn't aware of every musical selection the band prepared for the event, and the piece has some historical significance.
"But I want everyone to feel included. If Sen. Coggs felt offended, I would want to extend my hand in apology."

"Dang....all these flags with ties to slavery and so few porticos. I need an antebellum home I can see that now."
LOL! With all of that wonderful enthusiasm,
I think you should get that antebellum home
in Madison, and very proudly decorate the
porticos with all of your flags.
Ya' gotta admit...you'd be noticed. ;o)
Dangit!
isn't that weird how FR has these post lags at times...I noticed that too.
you know there was a time you could buy an antebellum great house for not a whole lot and fix em up across the South. I remember some around Franklin here in Tenn that went for less than 100K with maybe 20-40 acres back in the early 80s.
now...anything antebellum historical around here is millions.
You said not to ask, so I won't - but I feel very sure you didn't grow up there with Frank Lloyd Wright. : ) (I grew up nearby myself.)
I can just imagine they are a fortune.
But, consider that they have already been refurbished.
I bet that cost the above mentioned fortune.
I'm sure they were low interest loans, though.
I think there is a gov't loan for historic homes.
There's only one true Antebellum home left in Meridian.
The rest of them were burned a long time ago.
yes...I think you can get historic registry help and they require things be done properly to period.
sounds fine to me, I'm a big believer in preserving most old architecture.
there are a lot around here....in the posher areas...when they go on market, it's at a premium.
Onyx did great with hers (they did buy the old Victorian did they not?)
Those digs here would be 3-4 times the price in a swank area.
My dad almost bought an antebellum home between Mufreesboro and Nashville (it had a name...they all do..lol) in 1986 or so. It was around 6000 sq ft with 120 acres and went for about 700K. That same home now would be 3.5-5M
And that property was in great shape.
My mom looked at a Victorian 3 story with attic and huge basement on Main St in Murfreesboro (Murfreesboro is to Nashville what Canton is to Jackson)...Main St is really nice....an historic district....about 10,000 sq ft in decent shape....the heirs were fighting. She was afraid of too much house...had an elevator. I told here we could all live in it..lol
It went for 350K about 6 years ago....a steal bigtime. If that happened today....I would buy it and commute. Helluva house.
They made a nice B&B of it.
Here's a link to the B&B that got away.

Speaking of names (you're right...they all have one ;o),
the ONE in Meridian is Merrehope.
It was Sherman's headquarters, and that's the only reason
it still stands.
I remember that!
The only way I can get Martha White's Self-Rising
Corn Meal is in a care package from my mother.*
There is NO other corn meal, IMO.
*I guess I could find a web site that offers it,
but it makes my mother feel needed. ;o)
..."Dixie" was written by a black man.
That doesn't seem to be the case. Would'a been funny though.
If groveling will satisfy and it is felt that no one is belittled by bowing down before another then by all means suck it up and get it done so all can get back to reality!
It is hoped then that doing the real work of the Senate and of the House will not be set aside while being suffocated with these outbursts of na na nana na, gotchas!
I frolicked as a lad on those steps and on that lawn.....Gone Are The Days....course it's surrounded by injun country now.
Only in the minds of liberals and those easily offended by anything with which they do not agree.
That is breathtakingly beautiful!
What memories you must have...
This is Merrehope.

I don't know why, but I was surprised to see it on the web.
I guess even those at the old homestead are web savvy. ;o)
If I remember correctly, the 'Bonnie Blue' was the flag of the state of Mississippi.
Well, hell! If it's good enough for President Lincoln, it ought to be good enough for the twits in Madison!
ROTFL!
We vacationed in your lovely state in the summer of 2003. We stayed up in Big Sky Mountain Village. What glorious scenery. We were struck by the fact that you could have such a wide view of things. Living here in the Northeast, your view is usually obstructed by trees and low hills.
