(Excerpt) Read more at marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov ...
If it was real wood I'm pretty sure the rover wouldn't have gone on towards the heatshield. I'm sure no real scientist is losing sleep over this.
I don't know if it's wood (would it have turned to dust by now?) or rock, but I'm certainly excited at the possibilities.
I'll wait for NASA and others with more knowledge to point me in the right direction.
None the less, it could be fun
You don't think it was a ... SPEED BUMP !!!
In earth gravity, a rock 3 ft. long and 4X6 inches would weigh nearly 100 lbs and be pretty difficult to flip with the side of the wheels, unless the substrate is really loose, and the tracks do not support that idea.
I'm too old and thick skinned to get upset by collecting a label from someone who doesn't know me personally...heck, I've been insulted far worse than that by my friends, for crying out loud.
The only way I can be hurt with with words, is to write them down on a sheet of stiff paper, roll up the paper into a very thin tube, and poke me vigorously in the eye with it.
Since I haven't seen bison boy sneaking up on me with a NYT in his hand, it's a nonevent.
But then who made it and for what purpose?
If fiber to tell you what it was, wood you be happy? or knot?
It's just a piece of an old Soviet probe. During the Andropov administration, the Soviet space program ran out of titanium and had to use alternative materials.
hunh...hunh...hunh....you said...wood.
The picture was from over 200 sols ago before the rover went into the crater. I found a few more frames at http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/opportunity_n115.html if anyone is interested.
On a planet with major wind sotwms that rock is far more likely than wood being found on mars...
Wood would require not only life but plant life..
Looking at the other images, it seems pretty obvious that this is just one of a multitude of rock fragments split and disturbed by the ground bulge from the impact (that formed the crater).
Taken out of context, it looks like a piece of wood lying on mudcracked sediment, but the mudcracked appearance is apparently a result of localized deformation proximal to the crater and caused by the impact. NEAT!
uh he said WOOD hehehehehehehehehe
lol as soon as I posted my comment I went looking through the rest of the posts and saw yours great minds must think alike or in our case twisted minds :-)
Perhaps, but I don't think we have enough data to rule it out (what's the gravity there? how heavy is the rover? is the rock solid or hollow? is it a even a rock?). I'm sure the NASA experts will come up with several plausible ideas.
Now, what would have been even more shocking, is if the object had been standing on end with a similar object attached about a quarter of the way from the top and perpendicular to the 1st object so as to form a t (cross). How much fun would that have been to watch the liberal left squirm.
I know, I know. Just wishful thinking, but I do like to see them squirm.
;^D
You pitiful earth creatures do not understand!!
Buffalo Head is a MARTIAN!! You have trodden upon his SACRED ANCESTRAL GROUND!!!
YOU WILL ALL BE ABSORBED INTO THE MARTIAN ENERGY BANKS! PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THE HONOR OF DYING!!!!!
Darn you have a way with words...I couldn't have said it better. If it wasn't for all the humor in this thread I would have split long ago.
How did Halliburton do that?
uhh - don't look now, but he's behind you with the NYT in one hand and the WP in the other.
But don't worry, he's red-lining all the inane comments in them. Looks like he'll be busy for a week.
;^D
