I have read many messages which object to same-sex marriage but I am still waiting to learn what specific adverse consequences opponents of gay marriage anticipate to result from its legalization.
In other words, suppose same-sex marriage becomes law during 2005. By 2010 or 2015 what specific indisputable adverse consequences to society do opponents predict to occur?
With respect to those critics of same-sex marriage who refer to "God's law" and "procreation" --- do they believe that heterosexual couples who cannot have children, or who do not wish to have children, should also NOT be allowed to marry?
The essence of a free society is choice---including the option of choosing private behavior that does not cause harm to another person. The alternative is coercion, i.e. using the coercive (and punitive) power of government through laws, bureaucrats, and police to dictate what choices are permissible.
Do opponents of same-sex marriage propose that our society should begin identifying areas where choices involving human intimacy should be regulated by government entities and thus dilute our commitment to the values inherent in a free society?
Do you support polygamy and adult incest?
What harm is done by a father marrying his adult daughter? How can you differentiate this from gay marriage?
Fair enough. I guess I was thinking of, say, hindu marriage rites which would have predated Christianity/judaism. Most cultures have similar rites which BTW adds to the argument that gay marriage is an oxymoron.

Stop hiding from the polygammy issue. Why do you think your marriage defintion must stop at any two persons? Why not three or five.

Frankly I think it's a little hysterical to equate denying homosexuals the PRIVILEGE (NOT the right) to marry with slavery.
And honey, I don't have to prove a thing. I'm not the one lobbying to change marriage law across the country, YOU are. Sick, to me, but hey, your mileage may vary.
Again, until and unless you can show an advantage to ordinary everyday VOTING conservative Christians who have resoundingly rejected homosexual marriage and the homosexual agenda all across the country, you might as well pi$$ up a rope.
Again, I'm not holding my breath. I don't get hostile until people whose lifestyle I reject as perverted and sick get in my face about it.
I used to be a teacher. Really. I left because the administration and the other teachers were too liberal, and the school system was broken in general.
1. Should gay marriage be legalized the next step will be to force churches to change their policy. Before that my children will have to walk through picket lines to their Catholic School.
2. Insurance - As soon as Gay marriage becomes law two things will happen. All non-married relationships will lose insurance (already happening). So the only way to get insurance for a dependent is to marry them.
3. Other "non-traditional" relationships will be run up the flag pole. They will use the same argument - how does it affect you?
4. Schools will be required to teach alternative lifestyles - way til you see the exit of traditional families from the public school system (oh wait - already happening)
May I add a question to your opeing post? Exactly how will same-sex marriage benefit society, children, etc.? For what reasons should it be allowed?

He's only going to argue from his "safe" position. He's got the talking points and anything outside of them confuses him.
I used to feel the same way. But once you have children it changes your whole outlook. I have many Gay male acquaintances but I would never have left them alone with my son when he was an impressionable teen. But they did tell me they respected me and would not have hit on him. I later found out that two of them were arrested in a child porn ring and were members of NAMBLA. Both were locally well known businessmen.
One more question, should I be allowed to marry my brother? Why? Why not?

In many states, adoption and foster care are divorced (no pun intended) from marriage. Foster care in particular, because the system is desperate to place kids into any home they can find, and most loving, normal couples are unwilling to take in a troubled 10-year-old from a different background.
In 47 states, homosexuals can adopt children. In some states they can adopt children as a couple. Almost every state in the country allows single people of whatever sexual orientation to adopt. Florida, Utah, and Mississippi don't allow gays to adopt, but Florida at least uses homosexual households for foster care because they need to. Otherwise the kids would be on the streets.
You raise a valid question. I don't claim to have all the answers (as many in this thread think they have).
My message was meant to trigger a discussion about how much we want government to regulate human intimacy.
I support government intervention or "interference into relationships" whenever harm or injury occurs -- such as spousal abuse and domestic violence.
The ease of getting a divorce is not the issue. The real issue is that many individuals apparently do not know the person they marry. Many years ago I lived with my boss and his "wife". They had been together for 5 years and had a daughter. I then learned that they were not married and they decided to get married. Three years after their marriage, they divorced. Go figure!
I am troubled by the undisguised hostility which is revealed in some of the messages in this thread. Those who speak about "God's law" or "offense to God" are not going to be amenable to any reasoned argument. I am curious, however, about what role within our society these folks think is acceptable for gay men and women? Should gays be allowed to vote? Should gays be allowed to achieve prominence in their professions? Should gays be allowed to receive awards and public recognition? Aren't all of these things "an offense to God" from their point of view?
