I know! But that does not make it any easier!

Good observation. It's definitely "soda" in Milwaukee and SE Wisconsin. I have no idea about the origin, however.

When the Mormans were forced out of Nauvoo Il they waited to leave until the middle of the winter and crossed the Mississippi on the ice to start their trek west

LOL!!! I have lived all over the place and this question always comes up. I call it Soda now after years of being raised in MI and calling it POP.

But the only soda I like is TAB- and that is not coke!

You say "pop," I say "soda." Let's call the whole thing off.

Whoa! My kid thinks it is funny that say "crick" for creek...

I think you're funny, too. Everyone knows a crick is smaller than a creek.

Here in Canada everybody says "pop", I know, you don't care, but I say 'soda' all the time just to make people do a double take, and cause I'm an American wannabe.

I learned that too from Little House. I am in awe of our frontier people who helped settle the unknown areas of this country.

If it's not a Coke, then it's a soft drink.

Not just that, I have overheard teenage girls saying "Dude" to one another.

Oh yeah, "Dude" is quintessential California-speak. It's something you call people, and it's also an expression on it's own (e.g. something good happens and everyone says "Dude!"). My wife (native Californian) says "Dude" constantly, and calls me "Dude", too -- it's pretty funny.

As long as you get what you want, who cares.

A "crick" is something that happens to your back.

Now that I am too far away from the big easy, you don't know how much I miss being able to use lagniappe, neutral ground and beaucoup (meaning a lot, like in I got beaucoup to do) - pronounced boo-coo. You also go by someone's house when you are going for a visit. You might also say, where ya at for hello. I was a New Orleans transplant, and still have that east Texas/Arkansas/Oklahoma base to my accent, even after moving to Idaho and then Utah, and you'll never get me to stop saying Y'all or got instead of have,(as in, I got some, or I ain't got none) but my sister-in-law, born and raised in New Orleans sounds like she's from Brooklyn.

Coke for me. Or an RC Cola with a Moon Pie. (banana, of course) I think I grew up being specific about which kind of coke I wanted. A Sprite is Sprite. Dr. Pepper is Dr. Pepper. Why would I ask for Coke if I really wanted Grape Nehi??????????????

Co-Cola is what my best friend's parents called Coke. My in-laws call carbonated beverages "Pop." That requires speficiation as to what kind of "pop" one wants. What a waste of time. It's like saying "at" at the end of a question. "Where are you at?" Why not, "Where are you?"
