There have been a few threads lately regarding people's effort to support the troops during this holiday season. Unfortunately, they have been a little quiet.
Accordingly, I would like to isssue a Christmas challenge to my fellow FReepers: I will match the next $500 in donations to USO Operation Phone Home. A link is provided above.
If you have been thinking about donating, but have not as of yet, now is the time to double your money! Help those people defending our country. They will greatly appreciate it.
USO challenge ping!
USO challenge ping!
You are absolutely correct in there are many troops around the world that are not currently in the headlines, but doing their duty to keep us safe. My donation last year was to Operation AC for the troops in Iraq.
This year I wanted to spread it around a bit, and thought of the challenge as a way to generate some extra donations. Let's hope FReepers are up to it!
Another way to help is simply buy phone cards at a drug or department store and drop them off at the nearest USO center. I volunteer at the airport USO in Cleveland, OH. We keep several on hand, when a Trooper walks in and ask for a phone card we gladly give them one. Check out the map/locations on the web site http://www.uso.org
THANKS, FReepers, for all your support!!
any USO phone card contribution works for me!
thanks for all your hard work.
I applaud and thank you for your contribution to this worthy cause. My donation won't qualify for your match but I will share what Mrs. NerdDad and I are doing. One of the programmers in my company has a son who is a Marine in Fallujah. Because of the personal connection we are sending a $25 phone card to him through his mom.
Again, thank you for this wonderful gift to this awesome cause.
Thanks for your thoughts and effort, ND. The phone cards seem to be a particularly appreciated item, no matter where a troop is stationed.
I am sure your contribution will be greatly appreciated as well.
Merry Christmas to you, sir.
I see your $500 and raise you $500.
VERY generous, of you CPT.! I knew I would some generous souls here.
I am afraid I cannot go that high, however. Sent too much money to the Swifties! LOL
What I will do: match your $500 as well as the $100 donated by others on this thread, for a total of $600 on my part.
Does that work for you? Perhaps you can take over the challenge. I would be honored.
Let me know, and many thanks for your donation. [BTW I am mailing my donation to Camp Casey near the DMZ]
Cpt. Clay,
I have not heard back from you since your post yesterday morning.
Please advise if this is a sincere pledge on your part.
Thanks.
And thanks to FMC for the links. By the way FMC, I'm married to a FMC. Go Army! LOL
Merry Christmas.

Thanks for posting this. I was looking for a way to help the troops for Christmas and had forgotten about the USO phone home program.

It is a very moving presentation. The lyrics to the background music:
In the quiet misty morning when the moon has gone to bed,
When the sparrows stop their singing and the sky is clear and red.
When the summer's ceased its gleaming,
When the corn is past its prime,
When adventure's lost its meaning,
I'll be homeward bound in time.
Bind me not to the pasture, chain me not to the plow.
Set me free to find my calling and I'll return to you somehow.
If you find it's me you're missing, if you're hoping I'll return.
To your thoughts I'll soon be list'ning, and in the road I'll stop and
turn.
Then the wind will set me racing as my journey nears its end.
And the path I'll be retracing when I'm homeward bound again.
Bind me not to the pasture, chain me not to the plow.
Set me free to find my calling and I'll return to you somehow.
In the quiet misty morning when the moon has gone to bed,
When the sparrows stop their singing,
I'll be homeward bound again.

I would like to thank everyone for their interest and participation on this thread.
while the donation of jwalsh07 does not technically meet the challenge, it is close enough for me. it is also most generous and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
accordingly, I have mailed a $500 check to the USO Korea designated for Operation Phone Home. per the request of conshack, the cards have been requested to be given to the troops at Camp Casey, very near the DMZ.
if anyone is interested in mailing donations there the address is: USO Korea, PSC 303, Box 53, APO AP 96204-0053 Attn: Stan Perry.
their website is:

And to all a good night.
And a very special Thank You
Who for our country do fight.

Thank You, Sir, for your donation. It is most appreciated.

I donated $200 earlier to the program, but then was appalled at some of the people the USO provided for the troops entertainment...people who have been vocally against the troops by supporting Michael Moore, others who stated that they supported any troops who killed their commanders, etc. I began to wonder just where my money was going...whether to the phone cards I thought I was buying, or towards the entertainers. I've been looking for other means to purchase the cards for the troops.
I understand, Shery. I was a bit surprised at some of the entertainers on the USO tour, too. This is one of the reasons I chose the Operation Phone Home program. It is not only one of the most popular programs with the troops, it is something I did not have to worry about.
I have been in email contact with Stan Perry of USO Korea, and he assures me that if you designate a program for your contribution, it goes to that program's general funds. Also, if you send your contribution to a specific country, it will go to the program and area you specify.
They have a number of programs available for designation. I am confident your funds went where you specified. I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
Very good of you and you'll be happy to know that my wife told me to double to your additional donation.
Please don't reply. LOL
