What Should Change About Fox News? (Vanity / Essay)
Self ^ | 12/17/2004 | Self

We know that Fox, among others, has people who regularly scan FreeRepublic for items of interest.  I want to take advantage of that to try to get some ideas in front of Roger Ailes and crew.

I'm going to lay out my ideas below, but I have a feeling that not only will others have their own equally good, or better, ideas,  but that there will also be folks who think my ideas are way off base.  So be it.  That's the idea behind posting this here, so that there can be open discussion of what is of interest to folks "like us," Freepers, pajamahadeen, et al.  Maybe some bits and pieces of a discussion like this will actually get to the powers that be at Fox and have some impact. FR tends to give one delusion of grandeur anyway, so why not?

So, here goes...

Agree about the business shows and Cavuto. I DO watch Cal Thomas. He has interesting guests, not always political, and does wonderful interviews, and his Cal-toons are hilarious.

Dear Mr. Ailes,

How about throwing a little eye candy in for us ladies? I mean, I love the Fox News guys, but a Mel Gibson look-alike would really be nice!

Thanks,
Lisa

OK, I'm not of that persuasion, but I kinda think that Greg Kelly of Fox News has some of the same looks and presence as Mel.

I agree with the evaluations you offered, I do watch the business shows and I find them the "same as" the other business shows. (seriously if you are telling me about buying or selling a stock on a tv show then the information is too late to be of use.)

I strongly agree with your asessment of O'Reily and Fox and friends on weekdays. Rush would have been absolutly positivly perfect in that show.

O'Reily seems to have still lingering liberalism poison from his Haaaaavaaaaard years.

As for fox and friends, (the weekend show is leftist and a waste of time so I don't even bother) The blond woman should just sit there and be quiet. As for the guy with the blond highlights, it just looks waaaaaay to fake.

I really wish they would do something DIFFERENT than the same old goofyness that everyone else does. They MIGHT add a tiny little bit of conservative in their presentation but it is NOT ENOUGH.

The first thing they can do to improve Fox and Friends is to start it at 5:00 AM.

Why not just TELL THE PUBLIC WHAT THE DNC talking point fax is every day? Sometimes all the fox personalities seem to be holding back inside the beltway information. Are they now having coctails with the rest of the insiders?

as for an totally out there idea: How about handing controll of the crawl at the bottom of the screen over to the Freepers? I would just looooove to see running commentary happening during the show. Thus when OReily is being obtuse AGAIN, we can comment IMMEDIATLY for all to see on the screen. (no more "select" emails at the end.) Unfortunatly I don't think the tech is up for it.

What happened to Katherine Heritage with the turtlenecks and super short hair cut? She covered the sniper shootings back East. Haven't seen her for a long time.

Great ideas. I'm especially enamored of deep sixing BOR and Greta and her tabloid format! I LOVE Cavuto (Especially his weekday slot)...But the Saturday morning Cost of Freedom lineup is about 2 shows too many. I'd really like John Gibson to have a prime time slot.

Hmmm, only ONE other complaint about short, interrupted just-when it-gets-interesting interviews, for ENDLESS, CONSTANT comercials!
I emailed Foxnews that if they would campaign on MORE NEWS, LESS COMMERCIALS, they would STAY ON TOP, BIG TIME.
You would think being #1, would generate more money, so they could shorten sell time down and play that fact up.
Also, nobody has spoken about some of the new ones, like Uma Pemaraju? David Folk Thomas, (wierd name).

Well, while I can't speak as to Major Bob's looks, I can say he's about the only analyst that isn't full of himself, or trying to armchair quarterback like the Fox NFL pregame team. Col. Hunt, Gen. McInerney (sp?), all of them need to go.

Well, Col. Hunt would be my pick to play Cotton Hill if they ever do a King of the Hill with live actors, but his analysis grates me for some reason. I agree that the Fox News Alerts get very old very fast, especially if it's "breaking news" that they've been reporting on all day.

How could I forget to mention the runner-up Future Mrs. WKU Man (second to Salma Hayek), Allysin Camerota?

I like most of what Fox is doing now, but agree that John Gibson should be given a more major role. His show is great, but it's not even repeated again throughout the night. It's too good of a program to be shown at a time when many people aren't even home from work, or when others are eating or preparing dinner.

And Fox and Friends WEEKEND is a disaster. The only reason I even have it on is to hear the Fox news correspondents report their stories. But I don't like any of the three hosts of the program. They seem to clown around too much, and don't know how to segue from a frivilous story to one that's more serious.

But I do like business programming, and that shown on Fox is entertaining and highly informative.
