Pollster Scott Rasmussen has some good news for conservatives who fear "Clinton III: The Return of Hillary."
Only 39 percent of voters would choose her for president in 2008, while 46 percent would back any Republican who runs against her, according to a Rasmussen survey conducted from December 3 5.
While polls against any generic candidate typically change when the candidate is named, polling below 40 pefcent is not a good omen for Hillary.
Indeed, her favorable rating barely edges her unfavorable by a margin of 45 to 42 percent - despite in the fact that she has earned decent marks as a Senator and is trying to move to the center on issues like immigration and national security.
The fact that 87 percent of voters already have an opinion about her is perhaps the most telling factor.
Rasmussen has bad news for John Kerry as well.
The same poll indicates that 42 percent of Democrats would like to nominate Hillary in 2008, compared to a mere 16 percent who'd like to give the Massachusetts liberal a second chance. 51 percent of Democrats believe that they need a centrist candidate in 2008.
That's bad news. Before the primaries, Bush was trailing "unnamed Democrat" by 11 points. Looks like a Hillary landslide.
What does is say about the Democrat party when the most "moderate" candidate they can think of is a lifelong Marxist?
Yessss!
(Fist pump. High-fives deft political strategist.)
I thought it read "geriatric" Republican.
Never mind.
That is good news.
Maybe the extreme left wing of the Dem party will snap off into oblivion, and we'll be left with conservatives & moderates in this country...?
Wishful thinking, I know...
Her shift to the right is not yet complete. She still has 2 years to remake herself. By the time she does we are going to have to remind the whole country about things like the Hillarycare healthcare system etc...She will be so far to the right of that publicly that most people will forget where she was, or worse, believe that she actually changed.
This could be interesting. I wonder how many of the 49% who may think they need a hard lefty will stay home if the 51% who believe they need a centrist get their way.
I think Zogby has her up 95-5.
Are you sure about Kevin? After all, he is drinking a Papst "BLUE" Ribbon.
I would vote for him first. Assuming he got out of prison after his stint on "Cops".
51% of Dems want a centrist candidate in 2008?
How will they find one among all the leftists?
If the "unnamed Republican" turned out to be John McCain, this conservative Republican would vote for Hildabeast.
That's it...we have no choice but to run Condi! for President.
I didn't know Generic was running? LOL
RUDY, RUDY, RUDY!!!
Really? You think McCain would be worse than Hillary or is this a protest?
Yup. By the time '08 hits she'll have the majority of Americans thinking she's Margaret Thatcher's conservative sister.
The other day I was listening to Dick Morris and Sean Hannity (who's a chump anyway) fret over Hillary's "conservative makeover". I have little doubt she'll make major (superficial) moves to the right over the next four years. I am NOT confident of her ability to fool nearly enough people to make the difference. As this poll indicates, Hillary is very much a known quantity. For a DOZEN YEARS now, she has been one of the single most polarizing figures in American politics.
That said, do not count Hillary out. The election's way too far off and we don't even have an obvious nominee. The Dems do. And forget the automatic assumption that She-Thing is "unelectable" -- anyone who can get the nomination of either major party can win the election.
