Teen Says He Lost Virginity At 9
CLEVELAND -- Research shows 16 percent of girls and 20 percent of boys have engaged in sexual intercourse by the time they reach their 14th birthday. For some fourth- and fifth-graders, sex is the topic of school lunch room conversations almost daily.
In a special report, NewsChannel5's Deb Lee explored the troubling statistics.
Lee talked with a 15-year-old Cleveland-area girl who is enrolled at the Pepper Pike Alcohol Treatment Center for kids about her experiences with alcohol and sex.
The teen said kids are having sex as young as 11 and 12 years old. She added that it happens at house parties in Cleveland and surrounding suburbs, where the liquor flows so freely and girls sometimes black out.
I know at least six or seven girls that are my good friends that got raped the first time they ever had sex, she said. That's how they lost their virginity by getting raped at a party while they were under the influence.
Another teen, who will be called Jay, also knows about the parties. He's also from the Cleveland area and was a resident at the treatment center. Jay, who is 18 now, said he had sex at an early age, too.
"I lost my virginity when I was 9 years old," he said. "Most of the time, it's us boys pressuring the girls to do this, do that. But sometimes it's not all our fault. Sometimes girls be dressing all trashy... you see them out in the street with their little short skirts and tank tops and stuff."
Another teen says TV glorifies sex.
"They're all drinking and getting drunk and everything and the rappers are talking about doing drugs and having sex with people and all that," a teen said.
Dr. Slyvia Rimm, an area expert on child psychology, has interviewed hundreds of children around the country for a book on habits of middle schoolers.
Lee said she discovered that second-, third- and fourth-graders are talking about sex.
"The oral sex, even a generation ago, wasn't common in high school and now is common as early as 8th grade and even common in high school and taken lightly, I'm sorry to say, in our former president's words," Rimm said.
Lee reported that former President Bill Clintons statement: I did not have sex with that woman... Miss Lewinsky," -- has had an impact.
She said teens do not think oral sex counts as sex.
"I think there can be real psychological harm when kids are that young Rimm said.
Many teens are choosing abstinence and sobriety. In fact, the 15-year-old in the story sought help through treatment and is now beginning a new life, in a new community, at a new school.
"I'm not going to have the peer pressure, and I'm gonna be able to do what I need to do to help myself," she said.
I just mentioned the movie "Thirteen" and it is another very shocking and disturbing movie.
I think it's good to know what other kids may be going through, and to keep your own kids away from them.
Which means 84% of girls and 80% of boys have not. That's the good news.
The key is to figure out what went right in the lives of that 84%/80% and try to incorporate that in the lives of the rest of the kids.
You sound like a good mom. You don't want to be their friend...you want to be their parent. Even if your kids did hate you, that means they will love you someday.
BJ clinton Legacy Bump!
When dads leave their families, daughters are easy prey.
I think all 14 year olds are full of sh-t. Especially ones in alcohol treatment programs.
He will be called Jay... eventually. Not that "Jay" is what he'll be called now. ;-)
Hey, homie, don't be feelin' me!
Maybe she's Catholic. Oral sex (with orgasm), even among married couples, is considered sinful by the Catholic church.
I considered private too, not for that reason. Many kids around here have gone... same problems, believe it or not. My kids stayed in public schools (in Oregon, where they're TERRIBLE!). Now, as a single parent, I prefer to keep doing what I do... which is to be the parent, not the friend. I continue to hope that I'm doing the right thing, which is to talk with them constantly... no subject is off limits... this way I'm the one who will hopefully have a bigger influence in the long run; continue to try to set an example and teach personal responsibility, self-respect and respect of others. So far, so good... 14 and 17 and pretty good kids.
>Oral Sex = SODOMY! One step BEYOND intercourse and into >perversion. Clinton = Pervert.
Hey, I'm no pervert, but oral sex is no stranger in my house. Husband and wife should be allowed to show affection how they want. Trashy oral sex behind a desk is another thing entirely.
Homeschool til they graduate ping.
Read the whole article. It's real nifty. And in Cleveland suburbs no less.
My daughter came home from school the other day and was upset about something that had happened in her first class of the day. To me, it was rather trivial, and she got over it though it did bug her all day long. What was most upsetting to me was what happened on her way home from school. She rides a bus, and the students have assigned seats. My daughter has complained on a number of occasions about the person who sits next to her, but she was really ticked about what happened on this particular day. The female with whom she shares a seat stood up and kissed another girl right there on the bus. She is obviously wanting attention, but blech! The response from the other occupants of the bus was rather vocal, but I'm not sure if the bus driver ever noticed a commotion. Blech blech blech. I think the girl in question is only a seventh grader, but I wonder where her parents have been during the last 12/13 years as well.
"Maybe she's Catholic. Oral sex (with orgasm), even among married couples, is considered sinful by the Catholic church."
Whatever. I suppose Catholics honor this, one and all. Right.
that's a girl... this is about a 9 year old BOY.
"that's a girl... this is about a 9 year old BOY."
Yes, and...?
While few 9 year old boys enter puberty, they still have their own sexuality. Hard as it is, I can still remember being 9 and looking at pictures of naked women and having the typical male reaction.
And where did I find such pictures? It wasn't difficult. Lots of the nasty little boys in my neighborhood had them. Little boys.....not as innocent as you'd think.
What does that have to do with anything? Catholic belief isn't defined by what most or all Catholics do, any more than Jewish belief is defined by the fact that most Jews don't keep kosher.
Orthodox Christian believers believe in objective moral truth. Something can be wrong even if 100% of people do it, because (with 2 notable exceptions, as far as Catholics are concerned), every person who's ever lived has sinned.
You evidently don't believe in objective moral truth. Your belief seems inherently self-contradictory and paradoxical, because to deny the existence of objective moral truth is automatically to assert an objective moral truth.
And, yes, my wife and I try to be faithful to the teachings of our Catholic faith in every part of our lives, including in the bedroom. We've found it to be profoundly fulfilling and beautiful.
