BALTIMORE (AP) — The president of the NAACP is stepping down as head of the nation's oldest and largest civil rights group, according to newspaper reports. Kweisi Mfume, who has been president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since 1996, planned to make the announcement Tuesday, The (Baltimore) Sun, citing an anonymous source, reported in Tuesday editions.

The resignation was also reported Tuesday in a USA Today opinions column by weekly contributor DeWayne Wickham.

Last month, the NCAAP announced that the Internal Revenue Service was reviewing the organization's federal tax-exempt status. NAACP chairman Julian Bond said the investigation stems from a July speech he gave that was critical of President Bush. Tax-exempt organizations are required to remain nonpartisan.

I wonder if his replacement will be black, since the NAACP is supposed to represent all colored people.....

"To win the Senate, Steele would have to deliver PG county (where he lives) and make a serious dent in Montgomery and Baltimore Counties."

In 2002, Bob Ehrlich won the governorship by a rather comfortable 3.87% margin even though he got below 23% in PG County and only 38% in Montco. Michael Steele would not need to do much better in those counties to win statewide, although he would be hardpressed to match Baltco native Ehrlich's 61% in Baltco.

My point about the Eastern Shore was not that Steele would be needed for the GOP to carry the region, but that the fact that Steele is more socially conservative than Ehrlich would help boost conservative turnout there, which would give the GOP candidates a larger vote margin in the region.

If this has already been mentioned forgive me, but I think he might be positioning himself for McAwful's position.

The only problem might be the NAACP's scandal.

The NAACP overhyped allegations of black voter disenfranchisement in Florida during the 2000 presidential elections. Mfume was leader of the NAACP at that time.

The US Civil Rights Commission investigated every single allegation (there were about 100), and found no substance to any of them.

The NAACP ceased to exist as a credible organization as a result, and its credibility is still nonexistent.

Did you notice that there were NO such complaints in the 2004 election?

Yeah. He did a lot for (to!) the NAACP.

Bill Cosby definitely would be the best man for the job, as long as they keep the admin crap off his back and just let him speak all over the country.

Daily News
Sir:

As I was born in Baltimore, three years after Frizzell Grey, I grew up with knowledge of his criminal record. As a teenager, he quit high school and began a career as a criminal. He ran illegal numbers, was a pimp, and fathered five children by four different women. Renaming himself Kweisi Mfume, he then became a local politician, "activist", and Congressman from the benighted state of Maryland.

Now he is stepping down as head of the NAACP (Daily News, page 10), which can only improve the ethical image of that organization.

"If he's anything like Jesse Jackass, he's got at least one mistress and a few illegitimate kids running around. When you're the man, you don't have to obey annoying rules."

Last night Tom Brokaw's NBC Nightly news said Mfume was retiring to spend more time with his family. I cracked up because he has either 7 or 9 illegitimate kids from 5 girlfriends, more or less. I told my better half that it was about time he started keeping track of his sluts and bastards, and it looks like the time has come.

Wow, that is great! Typical liberal. The only surprise would have been if he had run a legitimate business, wasn't into any shakedown or bribery schemes, and wasn't running around on his wife.

Let the NAACP die. It no longer serves any useful purpose.
