" ..... Vang was later apprehended by Wisconsin DNR Warden Jeremy Peery. Vang was still in possesion of his hunting gear., including back tag and also his rifle. The rifle was a Saiga SKS 7.62 X 39 Caliber, Serial Number H03104079....

Actually, the SKS gas tube is above the barrel.

Oh my little niche is a bit wider than that. It extends to all US cartridge firing longarms and sidearms.
Wanna talk about: Trapdoors? Krags? the Model of 1903? That is one of my favorites. The Garand as well. Wanna talk technique for offhand, sitting and prone? Reloading? Fine details of various models?
I fired the combloc junk and admit I have zero interest in it.
After all, only accurate rifles are interesting.
As to your being Semper offended if it helps my amusing experiences with blowhards at the range is not limited to former military wannabe precision paper punchers. I get the biggest laughs from hunters sighting in their Remingtons and Savages and etc.
Bragging about last season's 400 yard shot on a muley out in Wyoming. "Yup one shot and dropped him in his tracks."
Then nimrod tacks a 12 inch paper plate to the 50 yard backstop and shoots all around it from a sandbag on a bench with a scope.
I'm practicing offhand at 200 yards with iron sights and shooting smaller groups than him.
These guys are funny.
I'll tell you my experiences with cops at the range some time.
"It's a Mauser."
"No, it'a a Mannlicher-Carcano."
Thank You, I stand corrected. The gas tube is on top of the barrel.
In any case they will have to have it at trial whenever this guy gets his day in court.
I own an SKS and I had one of these Saigas in my hands at a gunshop two weeks ago. They are two different guns. One is not a knock-off of the other. I can find similarities in a few features but they are different, separate and distinct
..didn't see anything about that 'duel', but bet Ole Zell Miller would be like for he and Chrissy Matthews to become 'honorary Hmongs' for a few days.....
Which is a problem with this story too. The original stories all talked about a 20rd magazine. I dont believe there is such a creature as a 20rd Saiga 7.62x39 magazine, just 10 and 30rd, meaning either he reloaded a fresh mag or the 20rd mag aspect of the story is false. I saw the previous post suggesting that it takes some work to modify and AK mag, various sites on the web say its "an easy mod". Either way, while Im not claiming to be an AK expert, I dont believe there is a 20rd AK mag to be modified. This brings us back to questioning the whole mag issue...
"By the way I am well aquainted with the real definition of "assault rifle". In fact most of my match rifles fall into that category." -NMC EXP
You paid the $200 tax on each or have a Class 3 licence?
"Oddly, they decided to misname this rifle an SKS, which was never classified as an assault weapon. It is classified as a curio and relic, which has always been legal and was not affected by the "assault weapons" ban." -Poser
I've seen enough of this to suspect it is not mere ignorance, but an organized campaign to add the SKS to a future "assault weapon" ban.
Or maybe I'm just cynical.
Is it me or has anyone else ever been able to find a "low powered" rifle?
Chambered for .22 short and loaded with subsonic ammo?
Saiga makes AK-47 variants, not sks's. Totally different firearm. The news got it wrong.
well ok 'the media' called it an "auotmatic"
pretty much standard fare...any gun store you go into to get a pistol will probably say "revolver" and "automatic"
but I suppose there might be an army of secretly anti gun people working in gun shops trying to scare people by calling semi auto pistols "automatic" just to make gun owners seem crazed
Nope. The action is more like the AK than the SKS.
You left out "cop-killing". Can't forget that part when dealing with the media.
we need to know more about this gun before we argue too much. there is a Saiga 7.62x39 manufactured by Kalashikov USA, and EAA.
There are some as cheap as $199
I think you're correct about the Saiga mags. Nothing on the exporter's site in that caliber/capacity combination.
Hungary did make 20 rd AK mags for thier AMD-65 version of the AK used by tank crews. These are available just about anywhere that sells milsurp stuff usually for about $5-$8 apiece. Still need to be modified to fit the Saiga.
The problem that has popped up with these DIY modifications is that they tend to cause feeding problems and the rifle jams. Of course if done by a competent gunsmith or if Vang is reasonably skilled it could have been done. Question is: why bother.
IMHO I tend to think he just had a spare 10 rd ready to go. The court papers don't mention the mag though they do give the serial number of the rifle and mention he did not have ammo on him when arrested.
Anyone who seriously believes the quisling mediots care about the truth is incredibly misinformed, stupid, or [woefully] both.

"read on another thread that he was a recent muslim convert"
This is the same as the idiotic media's jump from a rifle used for hunting being an assualt rifle. If you follow the "thread" you are referring to, after the blogger was asked where he saw this there was a lot of "I know I saw it somewhere" "now where did I see that" until no one asked anymore! The accused is an insane murderer doesn't matter what race color or creed. Plain and simple, jumping to conclusions that he was a "muslim and pre-meditated" because you saw it in another thread is why bloggers get such a bad reputation as close-minded self-serving zealots. Come on guys let's use our brains and a little restraint not every moron is a muslim.
