Bush The Insurgent (Fred Barnes On Why Bush Is Turning D.C Upside Down Alert)
Opinionjournal.com ^ | 11/23/04 | Fred Barnes

By Washington standards, Mr. Bush is a misfit. He's different. He barely socializes at all and on weekends and holidays makes a beeline for Camp David or his ranch in Crawford, Texas. He'd rather invite Christian musician Michael W. Smith and his wife to the White House for dinner than eat out. If Mr. Bush really wanted to soothe establishment types, he'd invite them to state dinners at the White House, after which their names would be in the paper. But he's held fewer state dinners than any president in memory.

Mr. Bush is also a seriously religious man in a largely secular town. This has brought him no end of criticism. He also refuses to hide his loathing of the press, probably the most dominant force in Washington. In short, Mr. Bush hasn't tried to fit in.

"Mr. Bush's agenda is post-Reagan in its conservatism, which means it's more far-reaching and thus more threatening to the establishment. Mr. Bush would not only reform Social Security and allow individuals to invest a portion of their payroll taxes in financial markets, he would also revamp the entire federal tax code and fill the Supreme Court with judicial conservatives. And those are only his domestic plans. In foreign affairs, Mr. Bush would make aggressive efforts to spread democracy around the world the centerpiece. The foreign policy élite is aghast."

This little tale reveals more about who Fred Barnes is and who he isn't. In a time of war, state dinners and other festivities just might appear unseemly and even improper to all except "beltway boys". Maybe he doesn't realize that Washington's insiders may have to get used to things W's way.

He wants to open the borders of the United States to millions of illegal immigrants.....

I don't love that about him.

The Bush family is Episcopalian, but the difference between Methodism and low Church Episcopalian ism is slight. The common thread is evangelicalism.

He does loathe the press. How could you not? However, Nixon allowed this to overcome him many times and he challenged the press which led to his downfall. The press has been in the business of destroying presidents ever since.

Bush has not allowed the press to goad him into any major mistakes by staying out of the spotlight and letting Rove do all the heavy lifting PR wise. I think this administration is a Godsend to America, however, the administration needs to do a better job of getting its side out. Not easy when the MSM hates you more than any president in the last 35 years and has sold its last shreds of dignity in order to defile his legitimacy.

"Posh. Actually, in the Christian Bible, it says to profess your faith quietly and not shout it from the rooftops as the hypocrites do. So Bush is being a committed Christian."

I love the sinner but hate the sin. I don't agree with every policy of Bush's but I think he's mostly doing what's right for this country.

One of the reasons I so admire President Bush. Is that he takes the job of protecting and running the country so seriously.

As an adult should!

Not some Priapic Frat-Boy, Pillsbury Dum-Bass or overaged, supperattenuated Boy-Toy Gigolo.

I hope the President plans another Thanksgiving with the Troops.

Just to PO the perpetual party-people!

Jack.

Bush is the mirror image of FDR. FDR was hated by the Republicans when he came to power because he was viewed as a traiter to his class, which during that time meant that he was a traiter to the ways and mores of the Republican elite that had previously run the country for 30 years.

Fast forward 70 years and its the Democratic elite that has been running the country decades and now along comes Bush, who should be part of the Democratic elite given his Yale and Harvard background, but instead Bush is in the process of cementing the hold of the Republican barbarians on power for the next generation. And to top that, he disdains everything the Democratic elite holds dear. Whereas they are militantly secular, Bush has become a born again Christian. Whereas they believe they should be in charge of their fellow citizens, Bush belives the citzenry should be in charge of themselves (hence the ownership society). Whereas the Democratic elite believes that the multilateral institutions know best (because they are composed of the power elite from other countries), Bush is singularly suspicious of multilateral institutions and is unwilling to do anything that would limit the ability of Americans to protect their singular way of life. I could go on, but I think the point is made. Bush is viewed as a traiter by all of the 'well-bred', 'well-educated' people that inhabit the Northeast, along with a smattering of the left coast counties, which is why he is so hated. The liberals can mock knuckleheaded red-staters, but they reserve a special hatred for people like Bush who they view as having completely gone over to the 'dark' side.

From what I have seen, I think more often than not. But there are times when someone comes to where he is like Camp David and conducts a service for him and whatever family, friends or staff want to attend.
