Bush is the mirror image of FDR. FDR was hated by the Republicans when he came to power because he was viewed as a traiter to his class, which during that time meant that he was a traiter to the ways and mores of the Republican elite that had previously run the country for 30 years.

Fast forward 70 years and its the Democratic elite that has been running the country decades and now along comes Bush, who should be part of the Democratic elite given his Yale and Harvard background, but instead Bush is in the process of cementing the hold of the Republican barbarians on power for the next generation. And to top that, he disdains everything the Democratic elite holds dear. Whereas they are militantly secular, Bush has become a born again Christian. Whereas they believe they should be in charge of their fellow citizens, Bush belives the citzenry should be in charge of themselves (hence the ownership society). Whereas the Democratic elite believes that the multilateral institutions know best (because they are composed of the power elite from other countries), Bush is singularly suspicious of multilateral institutions and is unwilling to do anything that would limit the ability of Americans to protect their singular way of life. I could go on, but I think the point is made. Bush is viewed as a traiter by all of the 'well-bred', 'well-educated' people that inhabit the Northeast, along with a smattering of the left coast counties, which is why he is so hated. The liberals can mock knuckleheaded red-staters, but they reserve a special hatred for people like Bush who they view as having completely gone over to the 'dark' side.
