SPRING, Tex. - In front of her gated apartment complex, Courtney Payne, a 9-year-old fourth grader with dark hair pulled tightly into a ponytail, exits a yellow school bus. Moments later, her movement is observed by Alan Bragg, the local police chief, standing in a windowless control room more than a mile away.

Chief Bragg is not using video surveillance. Rather, he watches an icon on a computer screen. The icon marks the spot on a map where Courtney got off the bus, and, on a larger level, it represents the latest in the convergence of technology and student security.

Hoping to prevent the loss of a child through kidnapping or more innocent circumstances, a few schools have begun monitoring student arrivals and departures using technology similar to that used to track livestock and pallets of retail shipments.

Here in a growing middle- and working-class suburb just north of Houston, the effort is undergoing its most ambitious test. The Spring Independent School District is equipping 28,000 students with ID badges containing computer chips that are read when the students get on and off school buses. The information is fed automatically by wireless phone to the police and school administrators.

Follow the logical conclusion: If social security cards were NEVER *intended* to be used as I.D.'s, (and now they are)then do you understand that this is merely a starting point to an eventual conclusion of required ID tags, then *eventually* required ID chips?

Good point. I have an old one issued sometime in the 50's and it has the "not for purposes of identification" on it. When I thought I had lost it and requested a replacement guess what? Of course the replacement doesn't contain that language. I threw the replacement away when I found the old one. Not that it makes any difference...

A FReeper reported that chips similar to the 'VeriChip' is already in use by covert ops, CIA, FBI, and secret service 3-Letter types in undercover environments.

_________________________

About the size of a grain of rice, each VeriChip contains a unique verification number, which can be used to access a subscriber-supplied database providing personal related information. And unlike conventional forms of identification, VeriChip cannot be lost, stolen, misplaced or counterfeited.

Once implanted just under the skin, via a quick, painless outpatient procedure (much like getting a shot), the VeriChip can be scanned when necessary with a proprietary VeriChip scanner.

Yeah, really. I don't think government schools are a healthy environment for children.

Well, they don't seem to be working out very well do they? That is, they don't seem to be reflecting the values of the communities in which they do their indoctrination teaching. Your child(ren) go to private schools?

Might be good for monitoring school bus activity.

Bus drivers sometimes get paid under the table by child care centers and private schools to stop and PICK up kids and then deliver them to their homes that are on that route.

I got yer caring lib utopia right here! Meanwhile, children have childhood stolen! Parents can't take their eyes off their kids for one minute anymore because of our sick, sick culture.

More good reasons why freedom-loving Americans should remove their children from the government schools.
If every conservative removed their child from the corrupt system, it would collapse overnite.
Conforming with some "Big Brother" solution is not the answer.

Actually, the kids should just ditch the school altogether.

Heck, it reminds me of my last job where I had to wear an electronic co-tag to enter the building. It would open/unlock doors to the building, floors, labs, (and in some cases, elevators) but could also be used to log when I came and left work, my floor, etc. My actual office itself used a metal key (but once in there, the network administrator could see everything on my networked computer desktop).

It's good (for tracking students) but bad because it conditions them to a lifetime of such monitoring both public and private. Also, if the students are not tracked after they leave the bus (or while waiting for it), this would seem to serve protection for the school to say "the buck never got here" or "I got him/her there safely, it's out of MY hands" (C.Y.A.).

They are slowly chipping away at the resistance. The soviet union pushed too hard too quickly.

Like the old boiling the frog analogy. If you throw a frog in to hot water, it will try to escape, but warm it up slowly and the from will gradually adjust.

Either way, our frogs will all be cooked!

I dunno. It would be interesting if a kid flushed it down the toilet and it was tracked going through the sewer system.

These kids should put their cards in envelopes and mail them to various parts of the world. I hate this electronic snooping garbage.

If the school district is concerned about safety let them increase security.
