New England States Making More, Giving Less
Boston Globe ^ | November 9, 2004 | Laura Walsh

HARTFORD, Conn. --Residents of Connecticut and its New England neighbors continue to earn more and give back less, according to an annual index of charitable giving.

Connecticut ranks first when it comes to making money, but joins New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island in falling to the very bottom of the 2004 Generosity Index, according to the Catalogue for Philanthropy.

Mississippi held onto its title as the most giving state for the eighth consecutive year. Following right behind are Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.

The survey is based on the average adjusted income of residents and the value of itemized charitable donations reported on 2002 federal tax returns, the latest year available.

New England's stinginess is nothing new. New Hampshire has been labeled the least generous state for six out of the last eight years, with only Massachusetts stealing the title in 1998 and 1999.

The Top 25 Generous States are all RED States! (Bush won 30 States)

The Blue States that Kerry won (20 of them) are all in the bottom 25 !

I'm willing to guess the Bushes gave much more to charity than the Billionairess and her stooge.

They keep more money saving up for the day they win the Presidency (chuckle) and have to pay more taxes. We know they feel guilty about not paying ehough taxes (esp John and Thereza Kerry).

I suspect the reason the RED states are more generous than the BLUE states is that people in the RED states believe charitable works are an individual responsibility whereas people in the BLUE states believe the government is responsible for charitable works.

Note how the families of the 9/11 victims wanted compensation from the government to correct the error of their deceased loved ones who were un- or under-insured and how the widow Claire McNamara in Clinton, Massachusetts (the wife of a deceased call firefighter) wants the town taxpayers to grant her about $700,000 in addition to the $400,000 she has received from the state and federal government and an undisclosed amount she has received from charitable contributions. (She refuses to disclose that amount claiming it is no one's business.)

Not to surprising to us, but I wonder if the left can ever get it through their concrete skulls that this is a living example of Compassionate Conservatives in action? We didn't just latch onto a catch phrase, it really means something? :-)

Liberal dogma has it that LIBERALS are the humanitarians, that they look out for the poor, that the Democratic Party should be their home, that Republicans are insensitive, cold-hearted, stingy SOB's..........

Yet the evidence consistently shows each year that the liberal Blue states are stingy with their wallets (and don't like interrupting the plans of fascist dictators for that matter).....

The first Blue State on the list is NY at #26.
Kerry's Massachusetts is #49.

I guess we in the Red States are more generous in charitable giving because we're stupid and read our Bibles. If we were smarter we wouldn't share the gifts our God provides for us.

And the irony is that in the blue states, it's Republicans that pay the most taxes.

Since liberals believe that the "rich" should be soaked (which they are), that that absolves them of any responsibility to be charitable.

So much for Lawrence O'Donnell and the red states being on the Government take -- we are much more generous in Red States -- know here in OK I see it all time when something tragic happens not to mention special holidays!

The cost of living has skyrocketed on the coast. The middle class struggles to keep up with the basics. There's no extra pocket change to give away. Many families are selling while their property values are still relatively high and moving out.

I guess the blue ones in NE really DO want to be part of Canada. They're trying really hard to emulate them.

In Massachusetts we donate more than most. We are fortunate though because we have taxation with representation.

Those Representatives do not mind taking in a nice paycheck for themselves, their families, their friends, their neighbors and a host of associates.

I believe that taxes are generally higher in this region.

I just looked at that chart the way you suggested. It is good to see my my friends and relatives in hard-working, Bible believing states really walk the walk. I'm glad to see it come out so clearly in this form.

Yeah...and the kicker is, the Reds make less and give more. And what ever happened to that liberal compassion for taking care of those less fortunate than them. What..all of the sudden they don't like entitlements. Great, let's end them and see what cities cry the loudest.

That story certainly was a crock of sheite. Most FReepers will not know of what you speak, but I do.

Retroactive benefits is a really bad idea. That woman made a bundle but still is going back to the well. It is a tragedy about her loss, but likely she was put up to it in order to set a precedent. The public officials are totally shameless when it comes to taxpayer dollars.

I keep reading articles about how the "religious left" is going to start being more vocal about their faith. They could start by opening up their wallets. "Faith without works is dead."

I'll give three reasons

1.) government has interfered with the individual goodwill. ex; why give money, when the state taxes me up the yazoo and gives out generous welfare anyways.

2.) liberal colonialists shot up the cost of living in many of these states. combine that with alot of regressive taxes and low paying private sector jobs (good luck getting public/union job unless you know someone, qualifications not required).

3.) yankee frugals :)
