Ashcroft won't join the Supremes. And Scalia will be Chief, not Thomas.

But Rudy would be an interesting choice for AG. Except he might be pretty aggressive against conservatives arguing for the pro-life cause before the Supreme Court or those who are trying to uphold DOMA.

I'll be interested to see who Bush picks.

How about Ken Starr for the Supreme Court? There shouldn't be any hard feelings left from 1998, so much time has passed...

Hey, great! And if the 'Rats try to block him, we can ride them down on everything -- scorched earth!

Ken Starr for Associate Justice!

And if Ken can't do it, how about Bill McCollum of Florida? He was an impeachment manager and a prosecutor. Or Henry Hyde of Illinois -- but Henry's a bit too old. McCollum and Starr are both youngish and could go on giving the 'Rats fits for 30 years.

They would both be good AG choices, too -- as would Hyde.

Is is just a coincidence that Pensylvania Avenue was re-opened to pedestrian traffic on the day Ashcroft resigned?

I like Ted Olson as the next AG.

Or Associate Justice. If he's at all like Barbara was, he'd be a socko Justice.

"The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved," John Ashcroft wrote in a five-page, handwritten letter to President Bush."

Really? That's a bit much.

Rudy could replace Tom Ridge for Homeland Security. A better fit I think.

Why would Conservatives want a Gay Agenda Promoting, Gun-Grabbing Abortionist as the Nation's top law officer?

Might fit right in, since many of them see no problem with massive government spending and millions pouring over our borders.

The prior three Chief Justices before Rehnquist were all outsiders.

Good historical points. But all these precedents do get broken sooner or later.

The prez has said many times that Scalia is his ideal of a supreme court justice. I think that's a pretty heavy indication.

Former Texas Senator Phil Gramm for Commerce Secretary.

No, I don't like Phil for anything. When he was my senator, he was too much about doing the Lobby's business. For all he talked about small-businessman Dicky Flatt when he was on campaign, he did the bidding of the big banks, credit-rating companies, marketers, and major (not independent) oil companies in practice. That junk mail you're getting? That was Phil, passing a law that allows people you do business with -- your bank, your insurance company -- to sell your confidential business info on the street. That's what Phil was about.

When my daughter was a freshman at Texas Tech.We had to move to LA for business reasons from Dallas...We brought her out that summer..had her tour UCLA and wanted her to explore other California possibilities..as we were so far away..
She visited around and turned up her nose..Lubbock was her choice and that ended that..We went home in a year so it all worked out..but the beach didn't beat out West Texas..It's a state of mind...and the people. She married a wonderful West Texan..lucky me!

Amen. When Ashcroft got offended by the breasts of a statue, I began longingly awaiting his departure. Good riddance.

For the record, the network cameramen were screwing with Ashcroft, ensuring that the bare breast appeared in the camera shot. Ashcroft is in the Great Hall of DOJ giving serious briefings in the aftermath of the Twin Towers and juvenile cameramen are trying to give us Twin Peaks. This wasn't the first administration to experience this effect, either. Remember how happy were were to have adults in charge back then? Well, shame on Ashcroft for trying to restore some decorum to deadly serious briefings. Shame on him too for mishandling the PR. He should have come right out and said why the distraction was eliminated.

That doesn't mean he'd be a good Justice ... just wanted to set the record straight on the urban legend of boobgate. One source, among others, including snopes.

Ok Joe we get your point. YOu don't like W or his administration.

Take your soapbox and rant against him elsewhere. This thread is about Sec. Evans and AG Ashcroft resigning. Not railing against congressional spending and porus borders.

Ken Starr for Associate Justice!

Ann Coulter for Associate Justice!

Well, every Democrat in the Senate would keel over from a heart attack at the thought of it. Instant unstoppable GOP majority!

Loser city. That's the kind of thinking which made the California Republican Party the success it is today. And why Arnold Scharzenegger could never have won a GOP primary for statewide office. His only shot at being a Republican governor was the recall.

You one-issue guys got us killed.

Would y'all leave Rudy G. out of the Bush administration? He's a hard-working, capable man, but he's NOT a Conservative & it does matter.

Concurring bump.

Early after his appointment to AG, he got so offended by the bare breasts of the statue of Justice (you know - the blinded woman holding scales) that he spent about $8000 of our tax dollars to erect a curtain to shield this terrible site from the public's viewing eyes.

This kind of small mindedness only gives ammo to the whacko leftists who are convinced that everyone on the right is as close-minded as Ashcroft.

The above story is not true.

We were just talking about Olsen as a new SC Justice. I do believe you are correct and the Chief Justice has to be picked from existing SC justices. It may even go by seniority but don't quote me.
