Washington, DC, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Observers watching the counting of New Mexico's 2004 provisional and absentee ballots have uncovered evidence of voter fraud, Opinion Journal said Tuesday.

O.J. political diarist John Fund said the Bernalillo County clerk "told media outlets that observers had discovered instances of voter fraud" during the attempt to qualify 18,000 provisional and absentee ballots cast in last week's presidential election.

"In counting the first 5,000 provisional ballots," Fund reported, "observers turned up 53 instances of individuals voting more than once. They also found four voters who were dead and dozens of felons attempting to vote. In two cases, the same individual tried to vote three times: early, absentee and on Election Day."

Glad to see it's finally making national headlines. Every time the NM GOP legislators try to make showing an ID for registering and voting part of our election code, the Rats yell "intimidation". One way or another, I expect something to be done to stop this crap, especially that we have the votes in Congress to pass national voting standards.

That really doesn't surprise me - didn't Soros say the Dems would "do anything" to unseat GWB?

The perpetrators should be found and prosecuted.

As long as these people know that they are safe from paying any penalty, they will become more and more flagrant in their corrupt activities.

That's one of the major purposes of punishment: to deter future crimes. Bush has to pass the word down that he is serious about cleaning up the election process.

The Democrats will try to turn their own fraud around to attempt to invalidate the election. They will fail, and they incur some risk if the trail of the fraud leads back to them.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

This is the way to address the problem. People who obviously voted fraudulently need to be prosecuted. No plea deals, but pursued to the full punishment allowed by law.

I don't care if these are super-pro-Bush voters or Kerry voters or just nutso Nader voters. We allow ONE vote for ONE citizen. People who are cheating need to pay big fines and/or go to jail (whatever the law allows for).

Then, these folks need to be made an example of in the media. I want to see whiny interviews of their relatives on the news about how mean the punishment is. I want to see articles in the Wash Times about the punishment. I want to hear left and right talk radio make a mockery of these people's names. I want to see websites set up to publicise the names of those convicted of this crime.

"Well, the article says nothing about which side the fraud was helping, so I guess we can draw our own conclusions based on the normal liberal bias to the media, eh?"

Yes it did. At the end it states that the Secretary of State in NM kicked the republicans out. Why else would she kick them out?

Democrats?........the article goes on to say

"The issue is not likely to die a quiet death. New Mexico Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron asked the state supreme court Monday to overturn a lower court ruling allowing Republican observers into the polls in Sandoval and Dona Ana counties. Vigil-Giron, a Democrat and elected official, is also seeking permission to evict the observers the Bernalillo County clerk allowed in to watch the counting, contending that New Mexico law does not provide for observers to be part of the review process."

Gee -- is Olbermann on this case?

Naah...he's probably trolling towel boys for massages at various San Francisco bath houses at the moment.

Can anyone think of a way to commit voter fraud on a recount?

I'd start with the District Attorney's office and maybe drop a dime to the INS, he could be an illegal.

It also makes you wonder why Kerry did not challenge the vote in Ohio. With Blackwell (a GOP) at the helm, I have a feeling that most of the Provisionals will be thrown out. I think there was a case where some guy turned voter applications with names like Mary Poppins.

Thanks much demlosers...I am following this with much interest, I have been crying foul since election night on the 13K Howlin live thread...

Something sneaky about Richardson and his Sec-of=State protests too much...I hope someone gets thrown in jail (I wonder if Gov. Richardson is quaking...)...The nightb efore the election Richardson was way to stoic in the face of Polls that were pointing at winning Bsh momentum in NM...

They should be prosecuted. I am not sure, but if they were convicted, my guess is election fraud in a federal election is a felony, and they would relinquish their voting priviliges for future elections. Any lawyers know if this is a felony crime?

If several hundred thousand voters pulled this stunt and get caught, imagine the impact on the next election results. :^) Voter fraud, the gift that keeps on giving....
