Ok, we've got two years. We know we need to pick up at least 6 seats. Assuming that we won't have a 100% success rate, we should probably choose at least 8-10 Democrat (or independent) seats to work on.
We have seen that we can make a difference in the outcome of elections. Let's put ourselves to work and help get W a fillabuster proof Senate.
first of all, the new term for defeating a Dem Senator is to Daschle them: as in Ben Nelson from Nebraska will be Daschled if he doesn't retire or switch parties.
My eyes, my eyes! Mercy!
any normal Senator would do their best to help out after a hurricaine. I'd give Nelson's opponent a chance.
Nobody will beat Kohl if he runs again, but he may well not. He's like 78 or something. Thompson should run if he doesn't.
Yes, Jeb should run against Nelson, and Kathryn Harris should run for Governor.
Sad to say, but Maria Cantwell is completely safe, barring the completely unlikely senario that Jennifer Dunn, who just retired from the House, decides she wants back in. She may have won her last election by a hair, but in doing so beat the last very high-profile Republican in the state.
I'd look to newly elected Attorney General Rob McKenna sometime in the future, and maybe Dino Rossi if he wins Governor (it's still being decided, 300,000 absentees still to count), but I don't think anybody has a realistic shot in 2006.
Hillary is beatable only if Giuliani runs. Giuliani gets whatever office he wants in NY. Pataki might give her a hard run, but he'd still lose.
bump
Seems how Baucus isn't up till 08, I don't see us beating him in 06.
Why do you think Harris will get clobbered? She won statewide twice before, granted, for a less high profile office, but still.
That said, I've said from the beginning: Jeb for Senate, Harris for Governor.
If Engler doesn't run in Michigain, we won't pick it up. Just thought I'd point that out.
There IS nobody to run against Cantwell, barring the extremely unlikely event that Jennifer Dunn, who just retired from the house, decides she wants back in. Otherwise, mine as well not even bother. She may have won in a whisker, but in doing so she brought down the last big name Republican standing. And while she's a fairly typical leftist, she positions herself well.
Oh, yeah! I'm looking forward to helping anybody that's gunning for Bill Nelson's seat! We've also got a Governor's race coming up in 2006, it should be interesting to say the least?
He might well retire? It's such a bummer being in the minority in the Senate. I think was LBJ who said being in the majority is like chicken salad, being in the minority is like chicken poop?
If the 'Rats in Pennsylvania had any intelligence, they would have recruited a pro-lifer like state Auditor Bob Casey or Congressman Tim Holden to run against Arlen Specter. Either one would have gotten a huge crossover of supporters of Pat Toomey and won the election. Instead, they choose an opponent (Joe Hoeffel) who was even more appalling and effectively reelected the Specter.
Don Carcieri for Senate in 2006!
Personally, I feel that if the appointments of Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, and Rice (not to mention all of the other high-profile minorities in the Republican party) were unable to accomplish this, putting a black woman on the presidential ticket won't -- unless she isn't a conservative.
And that is what I would like to know more about her and her positions on all of the issues facing our country before considering giving in to Condi hysteria that tends to run around certain corners of this board. At least with the Keyes fanatics, you know why, based on policies, they like him so much.
Finally, I am well aware of the standard John Birch Society critiques of Eisenhauer. I was not claiming that he was a giant. I am merely saying that he was perceived and acclaimed as such by the country when he leapt straight to the presidency without ever having previously won an election. I stand by my assessment that Rice is an obscure governmental bureaucrat by comparison to the public opinion about Ike circa 1950. My own family tended toward the Robert Taft wing of the Republican party, and wasn't particularly wild about Ike, so I'm hardly a fan of his.
Ike was essentially a celebrity president, and that's what Rice would have to be, as well, to run for president in 2008. She doesn't seem to me to have quite enough celebrity to pull it off.
The serious point about 2006 is very important. We need to gain seats -- with real conservatives -- in that election, and for precisely the reasons you state.
Um, Johnson isn't up until 2008. Doesn't anyone remember his stolen election just 2 years ago? Same with Baucus, who someone else mentioned.
