Serious question about Brit Bashing on Free Republic...

Posted on 11/05/2004 2:53:54 PM PST by BritishBulldog

Just lately (noticeably since the US election result) there seems to be an awful lot of anti-British sentiment on here (there always was a little but I put that down to a handful of xenophobic kiddies)

What I would like to know is do most Freepers now share the low opinion that some (many) on here seem to have of our nation or is it just a small (but very vocal) minority of morons?

I've enjoyed this forum (for the relatively short time that I've contributed) and have always liked Americans in general, but I now find myself reconsidering my thoughts on both.

If we Brits are not liked or wanted around here, I think I'll probably discontinue my involvement.

"I like the British people in general - its just socialists that I detest."

In case you haven't noticed, there's been a socialist government there for the past two terms of office. The "British people in general" are voting for the Labour Party.

Not only the Guardian, but no one's mentioned this morning's thread about the English school that is being asked to remove "Saint" from its name lest "some people" be offended. There was some childish anti-British talk on that thread... Those Freepers, and all of us, really, need to be reminded that we can't thank you Brits enough for standing up with us against the bad guys and going into Iraq, for your leaders like Churchill and Thatcher (and others when they are unclouded by socialist delusion), and for Britain's magnificent heritage that is hardly taught to our younger generation because of diversity and political correctness.

I live in what is prolly the bluest State. Blue on the political map, and blue because the Blue guys lost, and boy did they! We from Massachusetts take a lot of grief here on FR, but it's ok because we're doing our best fighting the good fight. So stick around, Bulldog. Stiff upper lip and all that rot :-)

I am an Anglophile, period. The special relationship between America and the UK should be nurtured as a cornerstone of both our nations' foreign policy. Although I am a Tory kind of guy, I have tremendous admiration for the Prime Minister in having the courage to stand against his own loony left to defend the West against the islamo-fascist attack.

The only thing I have never understood is why can't the British make a decent sausage?

I agree that, on balance, conservatives do have a very favorable opinion of Brits.

re: The Brits's Faux Parliment and burning

No doubt that the provisional Parliament and voting to have it burned down is a riot! Always nice to see some top-shelf levity in wartime! I have a sense of humor, as I said, admiring funny Brits like Chaplin, Benny Hill, The Goodies, Peter Sellers, Dr Who, and many others! ;-)

I have a lot of respect for the British. Thank God we inherited British law. However, I would say the constant attack of the British media calling us "stupid" and other similar adjectives, would be reason enough reason to complain just a little. Then again, maybe I'm just too stupid.

I think you are getting confused, and rightfully so, at the Euro-bashing (and let's face it, the views of the people in the U.K. are becoming less independent and more tied to France with each passing year), that many here believe is well deserved. When the British newspapers print complete trash about America, falsely representing the intelligence of her people and her President, our policies and intentions, of course we are going to react strongly.

We still feel a lot of pride for our sacrifices in Europe in the 1940's, and pain for having been spat on by many Europeans ever since. These newspaper articles that disparage our President and the will of the American people tend to make us very angry. Some of us look at the situation in England, see her losing herself in the grasp of socialism and Islamic fundamentalism, and quite frankly believe your country deserves what is coming to it. We don't wish for bad things to happen to you, but we are simply tired of coming to the rescue of people who truly show no appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who died so that Europe could be free. We can only take so much abuse from those who pretend to call us "friends".

That's not to say we dislike the British people here. Many here feel we owe a debt to the Brits for their service and friendship over the past years. But this doesn't mean we will sit idly by while your press and members of your government repeatedly insults a majority of our people.

We realize that many brits are still our friends. We are hammering articles in leftist rags, and leftist America hating media fools over there.

We really don't understand what has happened to Brits over there, we wonder how much freedom they are willing to give up to be a member of the self serving, power hungry E.U..
It would to to remember that members of the E.U. are just as corrupt and self serving as the U.N. has proven to be.

And when stories come out of Britian of a man killing an intruder and then being in far more trouble than the intruder, we think the commies have taken over Britain and the nation may be lost due to moral lack, or loss of spine.

If your not guilty of going left and are as afraid for your nation as much as we are in fear of the insane leftist agena attempting to take over this nation, then you are among friends and no one is upset with you personally, nor what we hope remains of the average Brit silent majority over seas.

Change your butcher! The British make delicious sausages. Right now, I have a craving for fish and chips.

The BBC and the lefties in Britainia are the ones we bash, just like the American libs we bash.

It is the "I kinda like Americans" "I can't stand the Frenchies either" "The EU is becoming the Frogs are in Charge" Brits we like.

We the US stood with the Brits when no one else would. We were allies when France was saying "Hey Nazi rule ain't so bad come on drink some coolaid" We kinda had a thing against Monte and his ego, Patton had an ego but he did not plan Market Garden and get 6000 Airborne killed wounded and captured. (sorry could not leave it out)

We are allies and always will be, but the lefties in your country are as bad as the lefties in the US. You have the BBC we have CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR.... and we don't believe them either.

Remember the BBC got booted from a British Warship during the Iraq War. Even your soldiers can't stand the BBC.

But bash Brits. You are not French and you bathe, how could we not like the Brits?

Hey the English don't speak French either - even after 6 years of high school French lessons. I guess you could say we're stubborn like Dubyah.

I think you are a little too thinskined right now. I have been here awhile and have never seen any Jim Crow signs pointed at any group other than the Rats, the French, and illegal immigrants. Some people get fired up over attacks against our country and respond back in kind. Thats a titfortat thing. We never have gotten used to constraints placed on us from overseas. Fought a couple of wars over it. The Guardian thing was about as rude of a thing done to our country in the past couple years that you will find.

As others have noted, the recent Brit bashing is a reaction to the Guardian, Indo and Mirror. I for one, don't feel the need to preface my remarks by 'of course, I don't mean all Brits, just the 75% who currrently say they hate us; the lads who are occupying Basra I love like brothers'. You can take that as read. Or not, as you wish. FR is not a place for the thin-skinned or faint-hearted.

We do, however, hate the French, permanently and irrevocably :-)

Ingnore the tarts on this thread. The British people are universally loved here in the US. The Socialist British Courts are despised...they're unAmerican(Duh!).

Any bashing you have seen relates to the Guardian article that called millions of Americans, idiots. That type of propaganda causes more damage than anything. Imagine if USA Today had a front page article titled with the same thing about the British. Wouldn't be nice.

That said, Britian is, as President Bush said, "America's greatest friend".
