Cindy the "deep valley" is everything from the Gulf Coast to the Big Bend. We won, one county and lost half a dozen. When I made the statement I didn't intend to look up every county to ID it, I was pointing out the areas we lost.

No, Texas, actually. That's just the way we talk around here:') Do you see my county? It's the red tip at the very bottom of Texas.

I was born in Camden and raised in Atlantic...both blue...but for the last 25 years I've been in Virginia Beach and it's bright red!

Go ahead. Try to rain on my parade. I have my umbrella:')

I know, looking at the big picture it's small but I would have thought it was impossible down here. It was just GW though. Everyone else went democrat. Only one Republican won that was only running against a liberal. I guess they hate those worse than republicans:')

My county (right next door to Cook County and Chicago) went red again. It is a well-entrenched, Republican-dominated county, although there has been an influx of Dims as they flee the crime and corruption and crappy schools of Chicago.

Cook County and Chicago alone accounted for some 75% of the Kerry vote in Illinois.

Comparing the 2000 and 2004 (so far) maps, I notice that most of the areas still gray today were blue in 2000.

I suspect that they're reluctant to admit they theyv'e gone red this time around. They're still counting, and counting again, hoping that enough counting will make it all be different somehow.

...My state, The People's Republic of Maryland, went red in 90% counties. Unfortunately the 10% Blues pulled the whole state down :-(

Hmmm, blame Baltimore I'll bet.

I figure population centers are the big contributors to the 'Islands of blue in a sea of red' phenomena... particularly if said population is comprised of sexual/ethnic minorities or it's a 'university' town.

That's why this county map looks so much more rosy than the electoral (state by state) map.
