Tidal wave threat 'over-hyped'

The risk of a landslide in the Canary Islands causing a tidal wave (tsunami) able to devastate America's east coast is vastly overstated. That's according to marine geologists studying ancient landslides in the area
In typical Canary Island landslides, chunks of land break off in bits, not in one dramatic plunge, they claim.
This contradicts previous warnings that an Isle of Man-sized chunk of land could fall off the island of La Palma into the sea, causing a mega-tsunami.

Of course, it would all be Bush's fault...

Just weird.
As the Canaries are much closer to Britain than they are to the US, and about 20 times closer to the African coast, this "concern" seems a bit misplaced.
I thought the Europeans were supposed to know geography so much better than mere Americans!

Just weird.
Not really, its a big old volcano with a growing crack on it. If it slid off, based on the crack, the eastern US would have about 8 hours warning and a super-tsunami all up and down the coast.
It may happen in the next 100,000 years or so, or may not. The odds are highly in our favor. But its not that weird to consider.

Hawaii beats the heck outta the Canaries for historic giant landslides.
- These landslides are among the largest on Earth, attaining lengths of 125 miles (200 km) and volumes of 1,200 cubic miles (5,000 cubic km). Moore and others (1989) identified two types of landslides: slumps and debris avalanches. Slumps moved on an overall slope >3¼, caused little disruption of the structural coherence of the volcano's flanks, and extended back to the volcanic rift zones and down to the base of the volcanic pile. Slumps may move slowly or surge abruptly forward several meters, causing large earthquakes. The 1868 and 1975 earthquakes, the largest of Hawaii's historic earthquakes, resulted from movement of the Hilina slump in south Hawaii.
