Kerry Scolds Vatican Over Gay Marriage
Associated Press
BOSTON - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry scolded the Vatican Friday for saying Catholic politicians like himself have a "moral duty" to oppose laws granting legal rights to gay couples.
"I believe in the church and I care about it enormously," said the Massachusetts senator. "But I think that it's important to not have the church instructing politicians. That is an inappropriate crossing of the line in America."
The Vatican had urged Catholics and non-Catholics Thursday to unite in campaigning against gay marriages and gay adoptions. The 12-page document, issued by the church, presents a battle plan for politicians confronted with legislation legalizing same-sex unions and rails against gay adoption.
The document calls on Catholic politicians to vote against laws granting legal recognition to homosexual unions and to work to repeal those already on the books.
"To vote in favor of a law so harmful to the common good is gravely immoral," it said, although it didn't specify penalties for Catholics who do.
Kerry opposes gay marriage, saying it is a right reserved in America for men and women, but he has said gay couples should have the same legal rights as husbands and wives.
When it returns from its August recess, the Senate will begin hearings to determine whether new laws are necessary to strengthen the federal definition of marriage as a man and a woman, a Republican senator said Friday.
In 1996, President Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which denied federal recognition of same-sex marriages and allowed states to ignore same-sex unions licensed elsewhere.
President Bush said at a White House news conference Wednesday that he believes "a marriage is between a man and a woman, and I think we ought to codify that one way or the other."
Bush spokesman Scott McClellan said the next day that the White House was studying possible responses if pending lawsuits in Massachusetts and New Jersey result in legalization of gay marriage.
Some Republicans in Congress also are pushing for a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriages.
Exactly right. Arrogance defines this (man). I have yet to find another word besides man to call him...
Thank you for posting this excerpt from Catholic teaching. Many fail to comprehend or acknowledge the TRUTH even when it is apparent, especially the DemocRAT running for president.
I would guess it's playing honestly, and well enough. But Bush is crippled with the same sort of campaign staff as his father. No Bush, yet, has shown they know how to run a campaign. The ONLY traction they've gotten is from the Swifties - and they aren't even on the payroll, and their more prominent spokesmen are Democrats!
He'd have more credibility if he had lobbied the Vatican for the removal, er, retirement, of Bernie Law.
Kerry only believes in RCC dogma when its convenient and beneficial to himself. Like when he claims to be Irish.
And then claims to be Jewish. (Or at least his grandfather).
More flipflops, or as the Financial Times prefers, "flexibility".
HOMOSEXUALITY IS A CHOICE. IF YOU BELEIVE OTHERWISE, THEN SLEEPING WITH LITTLE CHILDREN IS NOT A CHOICE EITHER.

Excellent! So simple and so to-the-point. I will have to use that one.
Thanks for the flag.
It's nice to see the Vatican finally speaking out about these issues, but I wish the statement had come out a few weeks ago instead of this close to the election. How many people will hear about this before Tuesday?
He's already given up the Catholic position...he plays the politician very well...he has demonstrated that he will say and do ANYTHING to achieve personal power...
I just prefer to call him what he is....
a pathological liar.
Listening to this guy is a lot like dealing with a contractor...they promise you everything, lie to your face, then take your money and leave your house in shambles...(not for the honest contractors out there)...
I beg to differ. Alberto Gonzalez is what I would call a "stealth" pro-lifer. J. Michael Luttig is a pro-lifer -- there's nothing "stealth" about him. And even the name of John Ashcroft has been mentioned.
Imagine a Supreme Court four years from now with John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O'Connor retired -- and replaced by Gonzalez, Luttig and Ashcroft. Goodbye Roe v. Wade, and good riddance.
I'm sure the Vatican is shaking in its boots. Wonder if kerry went to Catholic mass today? Did he go to other churches instead? What a hypocrite.
Is he trying to become the anitchrist?
How dare that apostate devil! Excommunicate him. Are the shepherds of the Church just a bunch of posers like Kerry?
mega ditos
Kerry ought to refer to his Bible (if he has one) where the subject of homosexuality is sandwiched between bestiality and incest, all in the same chaper. And then he ought to shut up.
It's separation of the POWERS of church and state you GUBER. The church can and should speak out regarding politicians and these issues. In fact they have a MORAL OBLIGATION to do so. YOU, JOHN KERRY, just don't like what the Vatican is saying.
After the election, win or lose, Kerry should be officially excommunicated. We don't need people like him confusing everyone. Kerry is NOT a Catholic and he needs to go NOW. Find a church that better represents your lack of morality.
Indeed some need additional spiritual gravitas, authenticity and backbone.
WHAT KERRY SAID:
"I believe in the church and I care about it enormously," said the Massachusetts senator..."
WHAT KERRY WAS THINKING:
"I believe in the church and all I care about is to *act* sincere, pious and devout--because I care about their VOTES enormously....Never mind my speech to the abortion industry--NARA Pro-Choice America Dinner. I was against infanticide--before I was for its billion-dollar lobby."
(he IS pro-abortion including partial birth!)

I'm surprised Kerry bothers to continue to profess. As far as I can see, he's a functional materialist and humanist.
OTOH, maybe he thinks that Catholicism is good for the hoi polloi and makes better polloi of them, so that they ought to be encouraged in their Catholicism -- about which, on the side, wiser heads may continue to disagree. That would make him a Straussian -- LOL! Maybe he ought to compare notes with Ambassador Keyes!
Uh-oh, you're in trouble now, LOL.
