On the Swift Vet site, it said that they contacted Sen. Miller's office with the info.

How can you say that four years of Carter was four years of nothing? We had record interest rates, gasoline rationing, hostage takings, Olympics cancelled and general economic malaise. That's not nothing.

I hope it true, but I'm not getting overly excited about this. I recently retired as a Commander from the reserves (USNA 81) and to my recollection officers don't receive OTHs. From the MILPers manual, the commission of an officer can be terminated by dismissal, revocation of commission, acceptance of resignation, dropping from rolls, termination of commission, and separation for cause. Perhaps it was different in the early 70s.

The money quote from the Human Events Online article (which was very good, BTW):

Finally, and most bizarre of all of Kerry's military records so far released is a DD 215, "Correction to DD Form 214," initiated for John Forbes Kerry on March 12, 2001. Among other things, the new form changes Kerry's official US Navy separation date to March 1, 1970! As noted earlier, he wasn't eligible for discharge until July, 1972, and was so. Why, then, the new document in 2001? Why, 29 years later, is there the need to correct or change the record?

Here's why. By moving Kerry's discharge date to early in 1970, all of Kerry's post-Vietnam activities would be theoretically exempt from military justice. By moving his discharge date to March of 1970, Kerry's meeting with the enemy, North Vietnamese Communists in Paris in May of 1970, would be exempt. His joining the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) in June of 1970 and his radical, anti-war anti-government activities that followed would be exempt. The Winter Soldier Investigation in January, 1971, and Kerry's infamous testimony to Congress in April, 1971 would be exempt. His arrest for his protest activities in May, 1971, would be exempt. His attendance at a VVAW meeting in Kansas City where the assassination of several prominent and hawkish U.S. senators was discussed and voted on would be exempt.

My brother is a Swift Vet, 43 boat, handle; SaltyDog, was in Arlington couple of weeks ago to film last ads with POW's. I just spoke with him by phone, he says the Chief in San Antonio is the real deal. Now we just have to be patient 'til some decisions are made on the smartest way to handle this. Let's hope and pray folks. Also am told that this Less Than Honorable Discharge was because of his activities after war, Paris, etc., but then dear ole peanut farmer Carter, fixed it all nice for him!

"Is a "general" discharge also considered an "other than honorable" discharge ??"

I think a general discharge under honorable conditions can be issued. If the discharge was less than honorable conditions, that's pretty bad. Chances are whatever his first discharge really was, it didn't tell the whole story and was probably more generous than it should have been.

OK gang here is the deal....

Someone mentioned the Former Secretary of the Navy in question was Mittendorf under Nixon

now that makes perfect sense because that is when our dear Jean Francois Kerry was up to no good whilst still a commissioned officer of the Navy and it has always puzzled me why Nixon et al who were keeping their eye on Kerry, after all the FBI were following him around, didn't take some kind of action vs Kerry - now treason is a difficult offence to prove and the rumour is Nixon didn't want to make Kerry a martyr but a less than honourable discharge would be an easyt thing to administer under the circumstances, esp since Nixon knew Kerry was politically ambitious......and it all makes sense with 1978 discharge under Carter etc.

however unless Mittendorf is alive or someone from the Navy with personal knowledge of facts will go on the record or there is some indisputable documentation from Mittendorf or the Navy that confirms Kerry was less than honourably discharged and better yet, why, this is just a rumour and
has no legs......

of course I can already hear the DNC screaming that this is just Nixon getting his revenge on the brave anti war John Kerry from the grave and everyone knew Nixon had it out for Kerry blah blah blah but who cares, it brings the focus back to Kerry and since he couldn't be bothered to release all his military records and gosh darn if he can prove otherwise, it's too late......

but like I said, Kerry campaigned in 1970 and said he was honourably discharged in 1970 - at minimum we expose yet another Kerry lie and we expose the reason why he won't sign that Standard Form 180 and what he is hiding from the public......

WHY? TO LIBERALS, WHEN IT COMES TO A REPUBLICAN, THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE CHARGE IS THE STANDARD. EVIDENCE OR THE LACK OF IT, DOESN'T MATTER. THE SAME RULE SHOULD BE APPLIED HERE. YES, TO A DEMOCRAT! I DON'T THINK WE HAVE TO PROVE IT. NOW LET JOHN F*CKIN' PUT UP OR SHUT UP. FOR ONCE, AN 11TH HOUR TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY. WE HAVE A SERIOUS CHARGE HERE, PEOPLE.
