SCRANTON - Returning to her father's hometown, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, criticized the Bush administration for what she called an attempt to undo 60 years of domestic progress.
"I realized they weren't out just to turn the clock back on the 1990s. They wanted to turn the clock back on the 20th century," she told the crowd at Lackawanna College's Mellow Theater on Wednesday morning. Democratic campaign officials estimated the crowd at nearly 1,000.
"Don't be fooled by what could very well be the sleeper issues of this campaign," Clinton said.
President George Bush plans to privatize Social Security, she said.
She also said "the so-called Medicare prescription drug benefit is a big benefit for drug companies and insurance companies, not such a big benefit for my mother and other seniors."
"Think about the radical, right-wing agenda. It's not in the mainstream of either the Republican party or the politics or the values of Pennsylvania or America," she said. "That's why we need a president who will keep us on the path of progress and success we have known for the past 50 or 60 years, starting with the New Deal."
As she took the stage, the crowd offered the former first lady a standing ovation - the first of many as Clinton recalled her regional roots and touted the Kerry/Edwards plan for health care reform.
"I am so happy to be back here. Probably the first time I was in Scranton was within months of my being born. My parents brought me back to the Court Street Methodist Church to be christened."
Clinton spent many of her summers and Christmas holidays in the 1950s and 1960s in Scranton with the family of her father, the son of British immigrants. "I've been coming here all my life, really," she said.
Portraying America as a nation of more and more uninsured citizens, Clinton described aspects of Sen. John Kerry's plan to lower insurance cost for small businesses.
"We have more uninsured people. We have more what I call underinsured people, people who think they have insurance, and lo and behold when something really serious happens they find out their insurance company is not going to cover it."
She described a scenario in which a small business is forced to raise insurance premiums when one or two employees are afflicted with costly, chronic illnesses.
Kerry, she said, has proposed the institution of a federal insurance "backstop." Once costs climb beyond $50,000 the federal government, acting as "a big reinsurer" would pick up 75 percent of additional cost.
Under the Kerry plan, Americans would also be given the opportunity to buy into the same health insurance system offered to members of Congress, she said.
Bush, she said, has distorted the details of Kerry's proposed reforms.
"We all are entitled to our opinions, but no one is entitled to their own facts, and it's about time this administration is held accountable because their version of reality is not the one most Americans are living in.
"I'm told Lackawanna meant fork of the stream. Well, how appropriate because we're really at the fork.
"Vote for the candidate that wants you to think and to hope. Are we going to stop thinking and follow an administration that has no plan for health care?"
Help me, my head is about to explode...Run away run away...
What a complete and total LIAR!
Bush has never said he wants to "privatize" S.S. only that he wanted to offer to younger people the option of doing that.
You know, you would begin to think that the Democrats would lie to make a political point, but surely that can't be the case.
Yeah....Hillary.......no Democrat thinks ANY YOUNG person COULD MANAGE their OWN MONEY better than YOU.....I am so SICK of Democrats.
She had a father? She seems like the product of a TWO MOTHER household?
I was born and raised in that part of the country. Lots of people dependant on unions, gov't, etc... for providing what independant people get on their own. This is old coal mining and lumber areas. Her message appeals to those who wish to stay on the government nipple.
"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you," Sen. Clinton said. "We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
Anyone who thinks socialized medicine is such a great idea should be made to spend some time in a country that has it.
And the Soviet Union lasted 70 years with it's socialist policies...doesn't mean it will work or is even correct.
"WE'RE GOING TO TAKE THINGS AWAY FROM YOU"

Wait, this is the lady who wanted to replace MediCare with StalinCare, right?
How come she didn't wear her NY Yankee's hat ???
"The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a
nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right,
which Heaven itself has ordained." --George Washington
Clintonistas and Chaos Kerry desire neither order or right....
Medicare prescription drugs were a huge new entitlement. The only thing our side got for it was health savings accounts. The arm-twisting and manipulation to pass this among conservative Republicans was a phenomenon to behold, as they all knew it was a budget-buster and were philosophically against it. What else does Shrillery want? Maybe she wanted it without the health savings accounts provision--all their way.
