Both presidential campaigns yesterday pledged support to U.S. servicemen and women in Iraq and took swipes at each other in response to Post columnist Steve Dunleavy's impassioned farewell to his Iraq-bound GI son.Sen. John Kerry's camp said Capt. Peter Dunleavy deserves new leadership, but President Bush's side said the open letter from the soldier's father on the front page of yesterday's Post confirms military families stand with the incumbent.
"John Kerry fought and bled for his country on the battlefield," said his spokesman, David Wade.
"No leader in America understands better or cares more about Capt. Peter J. Dunleavy and the thousands upon thousands of soldiers just like him who deserve leadership that will win the war in Iraq and bring them home with victory."
But Bush spokesman Brain Jones said the "heartfelt letter confirms what a number of public opinion surveys have found:
"That military families overwhelmingly support the president because of his strong and steadfast leadership."
Steve Dunleavy met with his 37-year-old son in Tulsa, Okla., before he shipped out to Iraq.
The columnist's front-page farewell declared he wanted his eldest son to serve under Bush. "He is special to me, as are all the thousands of boys and girls who serve this country, because he looks at fear as a headache and duty as the ultimate," he wrote. Click to learn more...
"And yet, John Kerry makes it look like these guys and gals are just victims wrong war, wrong time, wrong place."
He said Kerry "embarrasses the United States abroad and he saps morale."

Kerry's definitely in the 2 minute drill. I hope Bush avoids the prevent defense and hammers away.
The biggest thing Kerry learned in Viet Nam is FEAR.
See the tagline...
God's speed to Steve's son and all sons and daughters in harms way..
Bush/Cheney...04
There is no evidence that Kerry ever bled, although maybe we can get his manicurist to confirm that.
Later in the column, "In my book, Kerry is giving comfort and succor to the enemy. And don't forget that Tokyo Rose got jail time for it after World War II, and Jane Fonda, Kerry's soul mate, should have during Vietnam."
"Kerry's definitely in the 2 minute drill. I hope Bush avoids the prevent defense and hammers away."
Absolutely. The prevent defense is unworthy of our Prez.
bttt
Prevent defense usually ends up being, 'prevent victory'.
Steve Dunleavy does have a way of pulling no punches. Especially when his son is concerned. And rightly so!
Let Kerry rant and rave. The more he does. The more damage he does to himself.
Kudos to Steve.
God watch and protect Captain Pete!
Jack.
Bled? LOL! The Donks are trying to make it sound as though John Kerry fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Anyways, John Kerry never bled in Vietnam unless from a self inflicted wound. Count on the Donks to inflate 3 months in Vietnam, 3 undeserved medals, into enduring heroism
What a column! I'm glad Dunleavy pulled no punches and said what is the undeniable truth: then as now, Kerry is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. How anybody could vote for that man is beyond me.
Kerry's idea of fighting a war is for the Viet Cong side.
My son is also going to Iraq in a month or so and we stand with him and the rest of the marines behind President Bush as the Commander and Chief. We know he won't cut and run after 3 months like JFK. Anyone that won't let the public see their entire record is hiding something. The troops know and I'll follow their vote for W.
And I've gotten more severe wounds than Kerry ever did just trying to get my cat to the vet.
How much blood could he have shed if he was never even hospitalized? You don't shed much blood if a bandaid is all the medical treatment required for your various "wounds". What a phony!
Birds gotta fly. Fish have to swim. And Kerry "embarrasses the United States abroad and saps morale."
