The film story has been pretty much discredited. Remember now, this man has known he wanted to run for public office since he was a teenager...he would NEVER have done that.

But at the time, he would have seen the trip to Paris are being a "doer" and I think he was surprised when he lost his first election, with all the publicity he got as a head of VVAW. Now, in wartime, he will pay the price. It also highlights why he must emphasize this isn't a "war", but a law enforcement issue.

It's "Stolen Valor," and the film has nothing about what flavor of discharge Kerry received.

Sorry... brain error. "Stolen Honor" is right, of course, but it still has nothing on Kerry's discharge status.

A General discharge can be for a variety of reasons. Not enough observed service time, or lack of enough years of service time (usually less than 18 months, which Kerry exceeded, so he doesn't qualify under that standard).

Usually, a general is awarded because the servicemember's behavior while on active duty just wasn't up to the standard that would be considered "honorable". For enlisted Navy personnel, 2 or more non-judicial punishment proceedings in a 3 or 4 year period, and a recommendation for a General discharge by that member's Commanding Officer is enough.

For an officer, even 1 NJP could be enough, as the standard for honorable service has to be neccessarily higher. This could explain why there has never been a full and complete release of all of LT(jg) Kerry's officer fitness reports (FITREPs), as an NJP proceeding would have been required to be annotated on his FITREP upon the date of required FITREP submission (for LTjgs, commonly twice a year) or upon transfer to a new command or release from active duty.

If that's the line of thinking here, it would've had to have been for his already-documented failure to follow what was conceded to be a lawful order by his superiors to destroy an enemy-held encampment. This could've occasioned discipline, but I think that the Swift Boat Vets would have already blown the coverup off of that one by now, some of them most likely having been "in country" during the incident, and a defineable paper trail having to have been detailed.

He wouldn't sell out on real and verifiable POW information. Not a chance.

The discharge from Carter in 78 was an honorable one, unless it was forged. :)

Rumor is that there is evidence of a criminal investigation of Kerry by the military, possibly related to a less-than-honorable discharge. I haven't seen Lipscomb's article yet...

no, the speculation is that a lower level discharge was upgraded at that time...no forgery alleged.

"Well, I wasn't born until 1967 and don't remember ANY of the Vietnam war. All I know is the stereotype of it not being very popular and people not liking the vets because they allegedly did attrocious things."

You've been fed revisionist history. If the war was "not very popular" then why did Nixon bury McGovern in 1972?

The Truth is that a majority of American views have been lost to decades of media hype, of retelling a myth about Vietnam being unpopular.

The Truth is while perhaps many had grown weary of years of war, they were nowhere near joining the loud, roudy minority of anti-war types. Proof is Nixon's landslide victory in 72.

People like Kerry in 1971, wearing fatigues with ribbons (not correct uniform) were seen as street protesters, like 1968 Chicago democrat convention trouble makers.

That is the correct light to see him in, today.

I'm aware that it has nothing to do with the status of Kerry's discharge. But, it's no secret, not even to those involved in his campaign that something is awry with his military service. They are desperate for the issue to go away! If it is a less than honorable discharge, it is highly unlikely that anyone in his campaign would know about it. Therefore, their hysteria is focused on all things exposing truth regarding Kerry's service. They know their sitting on top of Mount Saint Helens. They just hope it doesn't erupt before the election (that is a metaphor).
