DEBATE MYSTERY: DID KERRY HAVE CHEAT SHEET?

Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:

"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."

So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?

A top Kerry campaign source explained to the DRUDGE REPORT late Sunday how Bush supporters were once again trying to distract.

"Kerry did not cheat," said the Kerry insider. "This is more lies from Republicans, who are hoping for a quick change of subject away from the president's performance, and the new polls."

I don't know. All the Networks and Fox News would have access to footage of all the angles. I hope someone can release footage of both hands (especially the front and side angles) and clear this up.

Seems to me that Lehrer needs to address this breaking of the debate rules. And kerry needs to see a few signs along his campaign route that ask him about the cheat sheets he withdrew from is pocket.

Didn't Drudge say that the Kerry people are saying it was a pen, not that he himself thought so?

With the higher res quicktime movie, it's clearly not a pen. He's using both hands and then aligns the edges just before putting "it" down.

I took the picture someone else posted earlier and put it in photo editor and posturized it and this is what I got.

And? It was his left, not his right hand, that was taking the stack of cards from his pocket. The object in his right hand, that he carried to the podium, was visible before his left hand came out of his pocket.

But Kerry's unfolding motions have been recorded directly following his video captured retrieval of the same object from his jacket (something expressly forbidden).

Not unfolding. He's straightening up a stack of cards or sheets. See the high res video. You can see him shuffling them with both hands and then tapping the top of the deck with a forefinger before setting them down.

Kerry should have to spend the rest of the week addressing the allegations that he cheated, losing any momentum that he gained from the debate. He will probably have a dozen different conflicting explanations -- "I didn't pull anything from my pocket, that's a Bush lie. I just took a handkerchief from my pocket. The note cards I took from my pocket were blanks to write on during the debate. All debaters take their note cards with their notes to the debates, but Bush and you people wouldn't know that since you're not expert debaters like I am. Bush did it, too. "
