PRINCETON, NJ -- John Kerry won the debate Thursday night, 53% to 37%, according to a random sample of 615 registered voters who watched the event. Almost half of the viewers said they felt more favorable about the senator because of the debate, and 60% said Kerry expressed himself more clearly than did President Bush.

However, viewers did not change their minds about who would do a better job in Iraq or better serve as the country's military leader.

Prior to the debate, viewers chose Bush over Kerry in handling the Iraq war by 54% to 40%. After the debate, the comparable figures were essentially unchanged, 54% to 43%.

Not that they are a part of the equation, but press and MSM in Japan seemed to weight it a bit toward Kerry. Of course, it was a bit news item in Japan afternoon and p.m. their time today:

From Betsy's Page:

Gallup's instant poll has some interesting internals.

Who won the debate?
K 53 B 37

Who is best able to handle the situation in Iraq?
K 43 B 54

Who to you trust better to handle the responsibility of being commander-in-chief?
K 44 B 54

Who agrees with you more on issues you care about?
K 46 B 49

Who expresses himself more clearly?
K 60 B 32

Who understands the issues better?
K 41 B 41

Who is more believable?
K 45 B 50

So, Kerry expressed himself better but people still don't seem to be buying it. I hope that result doesn't change with the post-debate spinning.

My real worry are the next two debates when they get to other topics that people agree with Kerry more, perhaps.

My take is: Kerry is great debater - so what?

Kerry is a great debater, which is great for a Senator.

But the President of the United States of America must make decisions, not simply debate them.

Bush can make a decision, and has the track record to prove it. Kerry has absolutely no good record for making decisions of any kind - recall that he hates lengthy menus? - and has no perceptable leadership qualities. I hope people remember that. I, for one, intend to remind them at every chance.

Even if you think Bush lost and I don't, it does not hurt him because the debate was on his strengh.

You know.... the American people are wising up. 20 years ago, Kerry would have a double diget lead after such a good "showing" last night. But finally, the American people are learning how to recognize the snakeoil salesmen.

In a debate, normally winning is based on the persuasive logic of someone's thoughts.

What did Kerry SAY that makes anyone think he "won"?

Maybe after this is over, Kerry will consider running for the Senate.

To me what mattered most in the debate was not the pros and cons of Iraq, who took up more of the TV screen, or who came across as more composed, it was the stand on America's NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY!

Each candidate made his stance crystal clear. President Bush stands for maintaining our national sovereignty and will not sign into law anything that would compromise it. John Kerry said he would sign Kyoto and put Americans under the boot of an international court, thereby destroying everything that America stands for. Our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves.

Why didn't Gallup ask, "Who do you think would best protect America's national sovereignty?"

Yes Kerry expressed his positions better last night.

He was slick, like a salesman trying to convince you to buy something you don't really need.

IMHO and very "H" it is. The debate winner should only be declared when we see the overall polling impact. To express oneself on an issue better doesn't necessarily mean that you are going to instantly get votes on that issue. If you clearly express your stance on an issue that is squarely at odds with the majority of voters, you have only secured a teetering loss. The Gallup numbers tell me that the people that thought they disagreed with Kerry on Iraq and the War on Terror and simply sure now that he has clearly got his message across.

Even Gallup would agree that polls immediately after the debate are meaningless.

Exactly!!! The media is treating this debate like it was the thing that would break the tie in a close election. Excuse me, but this is not that close (yet, it probably will be, but not yet). Bush had the lead coming in. Why?? Not because Bush is better spoken or more polished etc. Bush is leading because more people agree with him on the issues.

The media has become too taken with the beauty contest and forgot that it is about issues. I mean honestly, FOX was even comparing who had better facial expressions. As if suddenly the electorate are going to change their minds about Bush. "Hey, I used to like Bush until he frowned." I agree that Kerry was smoother, but that does not change the fact that his views regarding the subject matter of the debates are not accepted by a majority of the electorate.

The picture is from file photos, but Kerry did give his lame eastern mystic salute to the audience.

What 3 main points did Yaaaawn make last night to win the war on terror??? He used every technique in the book, including grabbing the Presidents hand as they broke to win and still got a draw or loss.

Pray for W and The Truth

I heard that the SKerry campaign was going to make an ad showing Bush's facial gestures when SKerry talked. They think they can equate it with Gore's sighs and eye-rolling but I think it will just backfire because people will know that Bush was justifiably angry at SKerry's lies.

No Kerry salute last night.

Also, you can see the photos on the Japanese website of the two men were not from last night.
