Ever have that dream that you show up at the big debate and the whole country is watching you and you suddenly realize that you forgot to study for it because you were hugging hurricane victims all day and now you can't think of all the good stuff you were planning to say? And to top it off, they forgot to fill your water glass?

You've read my mind--not only did it strike me that Bush didn't appear to do sufficient "study-up" because he was busy comforting and tending to the hurricane victims, but that it's a case of the WH getting too overconfident again.

As for the water glass, it's a small thing but it didn't look very good. I watched the whole debate (my eyes strayed only a few times from the tv screen), but from what I saw, Bush drank enough water to fill a bathtub, while Kerry didn't sip at all. Also, Bush at some moments was shuffling his papers too much, like he was distracted. It's superficial these things, but they don't look good, I reiterate.

would came over

This was not a mistake, but an advanced, highly nuanced use of the language.

Clearly, W did not finish off F'n tonight. In addition, F'n was not as unlikable as we all hoped he would be. That is disappointing.

On the other hand, there were no memorable lines tonight. Kerry did not tell people anything about him that they did not know before, and W did not have any major gaffes.

I can't see this leading to any kind of significant bounce for the Kerry camp. Since they are currently behind, they have to be somewhat disappointed as well.

Republicans are emotionally attached to G.W. They've watched as Bush was hammered on policy and mannerisms. It's made Repubs/conservatives jitterish. As a result, I think many are hypersensitive and tend to be more critical of any move G.W. makes, worried about whether it will be fodder for the next attack.

These debates need to be viewed through the eyes of the undecideds that are not attached to either candidate.

Verdict-

Style is draw/edge to Kerry.

Substance heavily slanted to Bush.

Images will be replaced as the candidates are seen afterwards. Words remain. Bush with the edge.

The internals on Bush are still really good regardless of whether Kerry did better in the debate. So, all is good!

I'm completely mystified with some of the posts on these debate threads. People are scoring this as if it were a college debate on some arcane topic.

The purpose of this debate is ultimately to show which candidate has the policies, character, temperament, and who is more presidential. Bush won on all counts. Now, he missed many opportunities to nail Kerry big time, and so that technically is a minus debate point, but folks, look at the big picture here.

Kerry was not the Cicero debater I had expected, he never landed a solid hit on Bush. To top it off, he gave the RNC the "global test" phrase they needed to finish him off among Reagan democrats. Its over.

Who gives a rat's toenail about some bloomin' online poll? That has absolutely zero impact on any Bush GOTV effort.

You're correct. Kerry won on delivery but not on content. What do people remember what Kerry said? We still know where W stands. But Kerry's gaffe is "GLOBAL TEST".

Style vs Substance. It really doesn't matter what the spin doctors and the MSM think. This election is about what Joe Six Pack thinks.
Joe Six Pack:
1. Doesn't like the UN
2. Doesn't give a rats ass about passing the global test
3. Likes being "On Offense"
4. Doesn't know what the hell the difference between bilateral negotiations and 6 party talks is but he knows that that Kim Jong Il is one freaky little dude and we better be ready to whack him.
5. Ain't gonna give no mullah nuclear fuel

The election is won in the Six Pack neighborhood not West Hollyhood.

I was surprised at Bill Schneider's numbers, but very pleased that despite Kerry's perceived "victory" tonight, a majority of those who say he did well still trust Mr Bush more on the Iraq issue.

i was rethinking my pessimism from tonight's debate... i realized that even if i thought Kerry won the debate, i'm not voting for him... there's got to be others like me... i was down on Dubya' because i wanted to much for him to knock it out of the park...

Alot of people on here get emotional even myself because we are afraid of the doofus getting in. You are completely right because after the dust settles and Rush, Hannity, and the G-man plus FoxNews get a hold of these red meat policy issues the crap will hit the fan. It will have the effect sort of like a explosive armor piercing shell with a delay charge which penetrates into a target and just sits there. Then you one big racking explosion which totally destroys the target and makes it FUBAR.

"Global Test Kerry"

I agree with you.
He stepped in the sh#t, sprayed his 'nuance' on it, and then tried to sell it to us after a little gold spray paint.

What is it, we asked?
Well of course, it still is now what it was when he started his excremental sculpture excercises tonight. Gold plated crap.

the guy wants to sell america out to the Frenchies.
and he confirmed it for everyone who knew it was an issue.
and anybody who watched tonight, was a person who was at least interested enough to know that Kerry has a reputation for kissing up to old Europe for their approval of our rights to defend ourselves.

Kerry is into unilaterally disarming the united states of america. And tonight, he sprayed paint on it, and tried to pass that crap of his off on us, as solid gold.

America is not as stupid as kerry condescendingly assumes.
kerry lost stature tonight.
he is a flipflopping sellout and everybody knows it.

bush lost points in a debate, based on his style, but won on the substance. He is a straighshooter who doesn't always talk straight. Kerry is a forked tongue crap sculptor, who never comes clean on anything one way or another.

Bush won votes.
I don't care about his debating skills, as long as he wakes up with terrorist asses in his crosshairs every morning for the next four years...

But Kerry's plan is so brilliant. He is going to talk lots of other nations to spill the blood of their sons and daughters so that we don't have too.

He is the only one who can do it because, damn it, he's just so much better then us.

Kerry sounded like he read from a script...

Yes, like he had the questions beforehand as a matter of fact.

I did not think the debates were going to matter that much any in the first place. By all accounts Reagan lost the first debate in 1984 handidly, yet it did not matter.

You are right on the money.

POTUS's strategy was to stay on message and let Kerry foam at the mouth. He knows that in Pajamaland, the knives are being sharpened! Conservative media will be ablaze with untruth's Kerry spouted tomorrow.

Bill Weld stated that he lost his debates to Kerry because he couldn't counter Kerry's effective lying about the facts.

No kidding. They were on top of the online polls, for sure. It doesn't hurt that their MSM pals gave them the links early, of course.

Like Reagan, Bush tends to be a slow starter. Reagan didn't do too well in that first debate with Mondale, but in the second debate he shined, with the classic line "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." SLAM DUNK! And we all know how that election turned out!
