This first debate is the real gun fight - whoever wins this one may have an advantage in the election. But, the President can afford to lose this first debate and possibly still remain ahead in the polls. The difference is that Kerry can't afford to lose. This debate will be the most watched of the three. The Kerry team knows this and are very eager to come out with a convincing win. This type of desperation will be telling in the way Kerry conducts himself. Most likely, Kerry will be Kerry with the tendency to give a paragraph style response to questions that only require a sentence or two to answer. Bush will stay on message and never waver unless given an opening to strike. Almost certainly, a desperate Kerry will provide that opening and we'll see a democratic campaign go down before our very eyes.
