I won't be intimidated for expressing my viewsPeople who object to her criticism of Islam should take her to court rather than take the law into their own hands, Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali tells Abi Daruvalla. |

Hirsi Ali has been moved to a safe house following new death threats and the publication of her private address on an Islamic website just four days after her controversial film 'Submission' was screened on Dutch TV.
With the assassination of right-wing political leader Pim Fortuyn in May 2002 still horribly fresh in peoples minds, the Dutch security services are clearly taking no chances and have mounted round-the-clock protection. But Hirsi Ali is undaunted: "Reactions to my film have been varied and I accept some people are offended, that's legitimate, but in a democracy it is not legitimate to intimidate and threaten someone for expressing her views. I made the film to publicise an injustice that is being ignored not only in Holland but throughout the world." Hirsi Ali reflects the spirit of today's Dutch society with her conviction that 'tolerance' means Muslims in the Netherlands almost one million in a total population of 16 million must accept Western values. "That means people from non-Western countries need to be educated about democratic values which include the freedom of expression," said Hirsi Ali. If people feel she has gone too far with her film they must take her to court and not take the law into their own hands, she said defiantly. "Otherwise the rule of the jungle will prevail," she added.
Even as a child, Hirsi Ali said she had trouble in submitting her will to Allah and her irritation at the lack of freedom imposed on her by her religion became stronger as the years past and she became integrated into Dutch society (she sought refuge in Holland in 1991 to avoid an arranged marriage). "I wanted to be part of Dutch society, to be financially independent, take off my headscarf and drink alcohol." She finally gave up her faith two years ago. Hirsi Ali constantly seeks confrontation with her outspoken views against Islam and has written two books on its harsh treatment of women: The Son Factory in 2003, and The Virgin Cage, which was published at the end of August (both in Dutch).
Hirsi Ali claims more than 60 percent of those fleeing domestic violence in Dutch womens shelters are Muslim. But Muslim organisations say 'Submission' contributes nothing towards a solution. Canan Ujar of the womens federation of Holland's biggest Muslim organisation, Milli Görüs: "This film is worthless and the nudity unnecessary. Emancipation has to come from within the Muslim community itself and we are already working on this by encouraging women to talk about domestic violence, organizing workshops to educate women on their rights and teaching them how to handle threatening situations." To others, the film resembles more an 'erotic' art film than a political statement. Cisca Dresselhuys, Hollands veteran feminist, concedes that the carefully choreographed scenes conjure up erotic associations for her but said this doesn't detract her from the central message of the film: "It is a very beautiful, poetic film but it is shocking. I dont think it would have been any stronger by making it full of blood and gore." The film also has supporters among Muslim women. Fadoua Bouali, a 33-year-old nurse in Amsterdam who has lived in Holland since she was seven, said she and many other Moroccan women are grateful that she is giving them a voice. "The conversations the women [in the film] have with God touched me as a Muslim woman enormously because they symbolize 'real' prayers." The fact that the women are naked does not disturb Bouali. Hirsi Ali says her aim is to reach out to Muslim women who live in fear so that they could see themselves reflected in the film and find the strength to break out of their situation. She also wants to provoke western liberals into taking a stand against violence against Muslim women: "People dont want to insult other cultures, but they should not close their eyes to the violence." |

To be fair, her style seems to lack taste. She could convey her message (and reach more people) in a way that will engage more people and alienate less people.
I am sypathetic to her message, but not enamored by her tactics.
In any event, I sure hope some clown doesn't kill her.
" Somali-born Hirsi Ali, 34, is herself a former Muslim and an outspoken critic of Islam's treatment of women. "
This is all the effect of the recent hijacking of a peaceful religion, or so I've read. LOL
Ping
And for those unfamiliar with the title, the very word 'Islam' means 'Submission.'
Naturally, I'll be waiting for the Leftists to condemn the "religion of peace" for the threats against this woman. (I'll also be waiting for snowballs in Hell.)
How so?
I think her printing the words of the Koran on women's flesh makes for powerful imagery, don't you?
And, apparently, she's got the Mohammedans in an uproar.
In the US, you can print the murderous words of the Koran on paper, and people just shrug - they do not connect the acts of violence with the "peaceful" religion.
This gal seems to be stirring up the pot abit and making the truth plain for all to see.
How do you think she could do better?
I agree. People who chop off innocent heads get zero sympathy from me. They can go back on their camels into the Stone Age.
It's derivative. Kafka already did it in a story.
Perhaps. Maybe she should just decapitate people to get her point across instead.
Considering the obscene brutality of the Islamofascists, this woman could put verses from the Quran on pasties and it'd still be morally superior to the abominations committed by the followers of the death cult and its false god.
She could convey her message (and reach more people) in a way that will engage more people and alienate less people.
Bah. Anyone who isn't offended by videotaped beheadings but gets wound up over the Quran written on a woman's torso is beyond reach already.
I don't have a suggestion as I am not a filmmaker, but I will say as a general principle of persuasion, it's usually unwise to alienate or anger people you should be trying to convince.
Powerful imagery or not, it's hard to see how many people she will convince. The challenge isn't to concoct powerful imagery alone - actually, that's relatively easy and any blockhead could come up with something that another blockhead will call 'powerful.' "Powerful" alone doesn't do the job, that is, bring these fine folks into the 21st century.
You don't conivince people very well when you anger and alienate them. Since she is knowingly angering and alienating people, I question the use of that tactic to impact and create positive change.
But what do I know?
I'm sorry, but the choice isn't between decapitating people and emplying the style she has chosen. Increating a false choice, you needlessly limit your thinking. No one even remotely suggested that, so it's strange that your thinking would take you in that direction.
You hit that note twice in just a few lines. That's on odd fixation, considering nobody suggested that. I suggest you take up shadowboxing (you seem to have the tools to excel at that).
This woman has more stones than the other 6 billion + muslims on this planet... bless her soul.
Agreed. I hope I get a chance to see her film.
Doesn't look too plot-driven. I'd encourage everyone to rent or buy the brilliant winner of Best Foreign Film, "Osama" (it has nothing to do with bin Laden). It will make you want to hug and kiss every American soldier you see even more than you do already.
Let me offer a theory -- the film wasn't made for Muslims, its intended audience is Western women. And its intent is to shock and horrify them.
I would wager that she feels the need to go over the top because she is well aware of the West's -- paticular Americans' -- tolerance for religion and religious freedom. The idea of a violently repressive religion is simply not in most Americans' emotional lexicon.
I do not believe she is necessarily trying to convince the adherents of the 7th century false religion to change. What she is attempting to do is alert the 21st Century Dutch that their nation is in danger of being destroyed by a menace that subjugates and degrades women, and shock them out of their open-minded complacency and foolish "tolerance" to act before it is too late and they suffer their own "9/11."
