CBS to investigate producer Mapes
CNN ^ | September 22, 2004 | Unknown

The fallout from CBS's doomed story about President Bush's National Guard service most endangers a woman few viewers know but who played a key role in two of the biggest television stories of the year.

Mary Mapes, a veteran producer at CBS News, reported most of the National Guard story, including obtaining the documents CBS now says it can't authenticate. She also passed on the phone number of her source, former Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett, to the Kerry campaign.

...

CBS acknowledged Mapes passed on Burkett's number to Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart, and Lockhart called him. Spokeswoman Kelli Edwards said CBS wasn't aware that this was part of any deal, but it's one of the things that will be examined by an independent commission...

CBS investigating its own is kind of like OJ searching for the 'real' killer.

Right...CBS is going to investigate Mapes.

Sort of like the Fox watching the hen house.

THE US ATTORNEY'S OFFICE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATING

They will sacrifice a woman and let Dan slide. Does anyone but me see the irony here?

Mapes read the memos over the phone to Hodges who said he was misled. Mapes assured the CBS execs that the memos were being authenticated and that the sources were credible. Mapes "broke" the story, allowing it to be rushed at the last minute, even though she got two of the docs in August, enough time to authenticate. Mapes gave Lockhart Burkett's number. Must I go on.

Many of the roads of deception lead to Mapes. Give me a break.

Dan Rather is the king Rat there, he won't be canned. But the unknown producer who just did what the culture at CBS (created by the Rathers and the Wallaces and the Safers) told her to do, well, there's your sacrifice. The old boys just have to do things like that to stay in power, that's how they keep their anchor jobs for 20 years while the Mapes and the Chungs and the rest all just sort of melt away....

Hello Freepers I'm a new guy first post be gentle

My theory of what happened is that Burkett (Army NG Ret) created the memos out of whole cloth. You remember the 86 year old secretary Knox stated there were bogus Army Terms (billets) in the memos that contributed to her assessment of the documents being faked. He in turn gave them to Max Cleland who gave them to Mapes and was Gunga Dan’s unimpeachable source. In his most partisan moments I don’t see Dan Rather viewing Burkett as an unimpeachable source. Rathers trip to Texas was to convince Burkett to fall on his sword and take one for the team and hide the Mapes Cleland (Kerry) connection.

Don't worry your head about that. It will follow I guarantee. But I am sick and stunned to keep reading on this board dismissive comments about Mapes as if she shouldn't be held to account.

Now you'll probably assure me that you want her held to account in addition to higher ups. Fine. But it starts here and she damned well better be investigated--and not by CBS, as if they don't know all there is to know already. After all, they're in the "news" business, they claim.

No question Mapes deserves to be fired. But that's just the start.

Oh, I think CBS already has an idea of Mapes' agenda and way of doing business and they approved, seeing as how they never fired her for her other interesting ways of "investigating":
