Kerry Pulls Campaign Ads From Four States
Yahoo! News (AP) ^ | 16 minutes ago | RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON - Bowing to political realities, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) has canceled plans to begin broadcasting television commercials in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana and the perennial battleground of Missouri.

The decision to shrink his political playing field reduces Kerry's strategic options — at least for now — in the homestretch of the campaign. George W. Bush won all four states in 2000, and Kerry can't win the White House without taking one or two of them away from the Republican incumbent.

The ads were scheduled to begin airing Oct. 5 as part of a $5 million investment through Nov. 2, but campaign advisers concluded Kerry isn't doing well enough in the states to justify the cost.

FYI - I *am* a downstater by birth - spent the first 25 years of my life there. (See your FReepmail.) All my college friends at U of I were from the Chicago area and had NO idea about the geography or demographics of downstate. I once took a bunch of my singer friends on a roadtrip back to my home town of Pontiac for a singing engagement, doing the "blacktop" thing. They were terrified I was lost :-). And I yanked their chains a lot too - "Hey, we're going to turn right at the rock coming up here...".

I would love to see Kerry forced to spend time and money to defend his base in states like New Jersey, Maine, Delaware, and Maryland. I think Bush may have a shot at the first two states, though admittedly it will be tough for him. Kerry is all but admitting that the battleground is shrinking for him and there can be no margin of error for his campaign. If Bush can carry some of the states in the midwest, maybe Oregon out west, and Pennsylvania and several other eastern states it'll all be over for Kerry.

Chapter 7 of UNFIT FOR COMMAND reveals that while still a Naval officer, John Kerry traveled to Paris for a secret summit with Communist Vietnamese leaders. The FBI was so concerned that they began monitoring Kerry's moves.

I am noticing more ads for GWB here in Illinois. Somebody must think they have a chance here, albeit small.

I see the Dubya ads here in IL (Chi SW burbs) on FNC, but that's a 'national buy', since I don't watch any of local channels out of Chicago I can't comment to that.

As to the polls, they're wacky IMO, I'll see one that shows Dubya down 4 (maybe it was a Tribune poll?) another down something like 13 (maybe it was CBS-WBBM or Sun-Times?). So I hope for the 'down 4' but really ignore them for now.

In any case, it'd be sweet if Kerry had to start spending money in a 'gimme' like IL is supposed to be :-)

Speaking just from a political strategery point of view here...Kerry has always had an almost impossible task (in the absence of bad news). In reality, his only hope has been things beyond his control....bad news. And to top it off, he has ALWAYS required a squeeker election...thread the needle on the Elect. Coll.

IMO his only chance is to just pound the daylights out of Florida and Ohio, do the best to hold Pennsylvania and Michigan and hope for the best...he has to just hope NJ, Maryland, Wisc, Oregan swing his way at the end and stay Dem...and try like crazy to flip Florida and Ohio.

Even with that he has a losing hand, and I don't think it will happen.....UNLESS..there is "bad news" of some form...which really is beyond anything Skerry can control anyway.

I'm still treating this election as if GWB is 10 points behind.

Same here. We HAVE to work it this way - the stakes are too high not to.

how many states is Bush advertising in?

how many states is kerry advertising in?

That will tell us the real state of affairs regardless of the MSM.

What I remember distinctly about the 2000 election, was that the talking heads made it a point to consistently point towards Missouri's track record of supporting the winning candidate. The rational was that Missouri was representative of the nation as a whole.

Interesting that with ads being pulled from Missouri I'm not hearing this point being made.

Kerry is probably anathema to local Dim politicians in those states anyway. They no doubt run away whenever he comes to town, so as not to be associated with those national party twits who thought a Massachusetts liberal anti-war dork could sell in the South. They are hughly relieved by this news.

Every FReeper needs to get Poll-watching Credentials! Easy to do - just ask for them from an area campaign office, such as the congressional race going on in your area.

If I was in a battleground state, I'd get up off my butt, nut I'm in a fairly wealthy area of Abilene Tx. I don't think I have to worry about Kerry stealing anything here....

But I do have to worry about Stenholm. In his ads he's "Independent Charles Stenholm" -- no party affiliation. He attacks Randy Negebauer from the right in his commercials. What a two-faced lowlife.
