When CNN aired an unsubstantiated story six years ago on U.S. military misconduct during the Vietnam War, chief executive Tom Johnson apologized, appointed an independent panel to investigate, fired two producers and eventually correspondent Peter Arnett -- and twice offered to resign himself.
When NBC's "Dateline" staged a fiery truck crash in 1993, the network apologized, appointed an independent panel, fired three producers and, three weeks later, ousted News Division President Michael Gartner.
"You have to take swift and decisive action," NBC News President Neal Shapiro, who took over "Dateline" after the debacle, said yesterday. "You have to have significant reform come out of it. We changed the personnel and the process."
The question now for CBS is whether an outside investigation will help the network repair its tattered reputation after its story charging that President Bush received favorable treatment in the National Guard -- and whether any high-level heads will roll.

No and no.
They don't know the meaning of the word fiasco until they appoint that "investigative body," to look into this scandal.
CBS still hasn't admitted that the documents were forged. They have a lot of backing down to do still.
Moreover, unlike the other episodes that are cited, this was NOT just CBS. It was also the DNC and the Kerry campaign, with connections to writes at the NY Times, to Democratic Senators, and probably to the Washington Compost whose story we are now reading.
It was just the opening gun in a long-planned October Surprise campaign that has now gone off the rails. Hundreds of people were probably implicated in it.
Please...for the love of everything holy...put me on the independent commission.
I'm the guy. I promise. I can be really...really objective about Daddie Dan.
Hell...I'll even take off my pajamas and put on real clothes.
I'll do it...for FREE!!! I'll pay my own air fair!!!
Oh...wait...I already did an independent investigation...I just forgot to report my findings.
DAN...MAPES...ANN (I don't know the man-daughter/son's name)...LOCKHART...
THEY ARE ALL GUILTY!
Kurtz did not say anything, he is just filling up space.

What connections to the NY Times? Democratic Senators?
The "investigation" will be conducted by members of the MSM, DNC, and, for balance, John McCain.
Don't forget about the collusion witht he Kerry campaign.
Not a thing on that list I can't live without. My nine-year-old will freak about the Nick thing...but she needs to read To Kill a Mockingbird anyway.
Ohhh I didn't know about that.
this will be like the newyork times guy, blair, who couldn't do the work then turned around and said he was pulling the Times' chain... some guy will come forward and make bucks from a book about how he brought cbs down
They're a long ways up the hill. After hearing about Lockhart's involvement, sounds like the brakes have failed and the tranny is out. I hope the eventual pile at the bottom burns for a long time.
Serious: My guess for CBS's "independent panel" would be.
Michael Moore
Joe Lockhart
John Kerry
Barbara Streisand
Sean Penn
Alec Baldwin
Larry Flynt (you know to add some publishing credibility. ..)
Woodward
Bernstein
Helen Thomas
Mark Shields
Eleanor Clift
Clarence Page
John McCain
I really like the way you put that.
Let it be written, let it be done.
