XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON SEPT 20, 2004 20:02:09 ET XXXXX

BUSH OFFICIALS WANT CBSNEWS MODERATOR OFF DEBATE Just hours after CBSNEWS admitted it cannot prove the authenticity of documents used in a 60 MINUTES story about President Bush's National Guard service, top Bush advisers are recommending a CBS reporter be removed as moderator of a planned presidential debate, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

At question is the approved Oct. 13 debate at Arizona State University in Tempe with Bob Schieffer, chief Washington correspondent for CBSNEWS, moderating.

"Considering the circumstances, we should definitely ask that Schieffer be replaced," a top Bush adviser told the president on Monday, according to a well-placed source.

The well-placed source continued: "Who can trust these CBS people to play it straight [during the debate]? I suspect they will be out for revenge."

The president is said to have not made any decision whether to seek a removal of the planned CBSNEWS moderator.

" Personally I want CBS "off" television. I have previously given them zero creditability on anything but football games. You can damn well be sure that henceforth I will check football scores with another station, before I take CBS's word for them."

I used to like cbssportline for ncaa football. Anybody ready to suggest a replacement?

This is interesting because Bob Schieffer is the brother of Tom Schieffer, a close Bush friend who was the GM for the Texas Rangers when the president owned the baseball team.

Many of you are misreading this article. All it says is that some WH officials are asking Bush to insist that the CBS moderator be removed. The article clearly says Bush hasn't decided to press for it. Bush gets advice all the time. They are just leaking the advice given.

It will be important to see what happens next and whether the WH presses for this.

Plus-which, Kerry Advisor Joe Lockhart just admitted getting a pre-show "heads-up" from Mary Mapes at CBS to call Bill Burkett, which he did!

Can you say "collusion?" I knew you could.

Watch the coverup. In addition to the felonious forging of Federal documents, people tend to break the law willy-nilly when it comes to the coverup!

I want Dan Rather, to make him appear fair and balanced! That is living good, to watch him choke on his questions.

Schieffer is such a tool. Came on earlier today on Imus pleading IGNORANCE
of anything that matters. His only frame of reference is what he hears on
CBS News...and we know that is a fraud.

He'll go. My best pick is Bret Hume...but the DEM-leaning Presidential
Debate Commission will probably pick NBC's David Schuster or NBC's Lawrance O'Donnell.
Maybe even the AP's Nedra Pickler.

Don't hold your breath that a "conservative" will get the spot.

If CBS still moderates a debate they will be under scrutiny in a way no other organization would be.

Yep. And they'll have no one to blame but themselves.

This is more than concern for Bob Sheiffer. This demand that he be removed will keep the CBS story front in center and will in effect force the news networks to look at the DNC memo ties. If the Bush people hadn't done this, Rather's apology may have ended the story. This shows that it is only beginning. Excellent move by the Bush campaign. As a side note, Brit would be great.

"RE: Britt Hume. He would be great. I think Jim Angle or Fred the Beatle Barnes or Tony Blankley would make a good backup too!"

All these would be good; but I would love to see Fred, step up to that Debate plate! Or even Charles Krauthammer; who takes no prisoners as well.

Britt is 'King' but actually think Fred and Charles; nail issues more 'definitely' than does Britt. . .

Man, as soon as I saw this on Drudge I hurried over here to get my two cents worth in, and there are already almost 200 replies.

Even if it's already been said, I've just got to give the Republicans a big "DUH" on this one. I've been wondering for two decades now how long they were going to put up with their enemies "moderating" all their debates, and giving their opponents a huge advantage.

Do ya finally get it? They're your enemies. It is stupid to allow them to moderate debates.

Since when is the president to be questioned by DNC-C BS?

He is to be questioned by a news organization and DNC-C BS forfeited their place as a news site when they starting giving campaign advise and serving as an arm of the DNC.
