Why is it so wrong for them to want more? Please explain why it is wrong for them to want health care coverage for their families.

People in most states would rather spend tax money by building prisons than having a tax increase for your kids in school.

Yes, I am a teacher and a lot of the things at the state level with our union is stupid, but don't anyone dare say that fighting for health care is wrong. If I want health care through the school that I teach at, it would cost me $920 a month, YES a month.

And for the person who said that teachers know what you are getting into, remeber that when you don't get your raise or increase in your benefits.

That's not the issue.

You have drank the kool-aid right along with the rest of them.

One thing is for sure: I will not be sending any children I may have in my lifetime to public schools if I can help it. The irrationality with the way these people are behaving in this incident indicates my children should not be in the care of such people.

Ok.. I will bite. Fighting for health care is wrong. Fighting for more benefits, more pay and more free time for working 9 months out of the year is wrong.

I don't believe you.

Show me a URL that I can go to for a public school system where it says it costs this much for their employees health care per month.

Don't get too upset, many here at the FR believe all teachers are socialist thugs- though 1/3 of us are Republicans.... They'll talk their smack and bitch and moan at the teachers when it is really the school administration they are upset with...

Not arguing with you, but I'd like to add my thoughts, as someone who has worked in both the public sector (public school teacher, 18 years; private school, 1 year) and private sector (tech writing in hi-tech/software industry, 17 years).

Private, publicly-held companies must distribute profits to the stockholders first. Workers may not see any of it (not all companies have employee profit-sharing).

A government entity does not make profits - all of its money comes from taxes. So school districts with a "surplus" (unspent budget monies) should return it to the taxpayers.

To keep up with soaring health insurance costs, businesses eliminate/decrease other benefits, have layoffs, and freeze hiring. I haven't had a raise in over 3 years, have lost vacation time, and am doing the work of laid-off coworkers.

Unemployed workers can pay COBRA health insurance at the same high rates as everyone else - they don't get a break simply because they're out of a job.

I am a former teacher who took a huge drop in pay to teach, (I also have a BSEE and MSEE and was a working engineer when I went into teaching.) Teachers must accept their contract. (and I am glad it is a no strike contract). Teachers should look to other ways to lower their med insurance. (Higher deductibles and tort reform come to mind.) Most teachers unions support democrats, and democrats are highly beholden to the trial lawyers assn which is directly responsible for high value awards for malpractice and hence high malpractice insurance costs which drive medical costs higher. Teachers cannot have it both ways. My opinion, Get Over It, keep teaching if that is what you want to do. Accept that high premiums are part of the price of todays set of laws. (I am retired and pay $600 out of pocket fees each month for my medical insurance, and if the costs go up, my fees go up. my retirement plan also pays $400 per month, which does not go up. I think medical fees are high enough, and teachers should join republicans in securing tort reform. That is what they should be fighting for.

So, umm, you're advocating a $12,000 a year increase in salary, right?

I'm sorry, but there are plenty of medical insurance options that run far, far, far, far less than that. Get a listing of options from Blue Cross, a 45 year old head of household can get insurance for themselves and their family members for under $300 a month.

People in most states would rather spend tax money by building prisons than having a tax increase for your kids in school.

No, that's a tax increase to pay for the medical insurance for the teachers, not a tax increase for the kids. It's for the kids, it's for the kids -- the last bastion of the liberal mindset.

If I may ask, if you are a classroom teacher, why are you posting to FR in the middle of the day and not teaching?

Of course. The government has no legal role in educating children

Also, and perhaps even more importantly, public education spends far more per student on average than private schools do and gets far lower achievement (results). Strip off some of the garbage (diveristy, tolerance, gay propaganda etc) and start teaching the three R's and then maybe you can make your case

I'd vote to totally defund the public schools in a heartbeat

Where in the Constitution does it say that employers are required to provide health insurance? What a stupid idea! Why not require them to provide transportation for their employees? Or a clothing allowance? We need to release employers from this burden that keeps them from hiring new employees. Let everyone be responsible for their own health care.
