Gov. Ernie Fletcher said yesterday that the Kentucky Education Association has "gone too far" by calling for an October strike unless the state improves the health-insurance plan for public school employees.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon, Fletcher urged the union to reconsider, and he said unless that happens, "it is inappropriate for me to negotiate in response to an illegal threat." -- The Courier-Journal
Ding! Ding! Ding! That's correct! The same things have been happening for 30 years, and no strike! Amazing!
Fletcher is going through with his original plans on the special session. He better have a good plan, because the Dems will try to obstruct again and leave him holding the bag. Fletcher is trying to get this off the table by November...if it works, it is brilliant, because the Dems will have no other issue. If it fails...all bets are off. This is a risky move.

Until teachers accept Merit Pay, their union goon will get NO symphathy from me. A friend of mine who is a public school teacher agrees with me.
This was THE big topic in my ed classes today. I said (and no one listened) that if everyone who has had their premiums double in the last couple of years went on strike, no one would be working at all!
That said, there really does seem to be a disparity between KY and neighboring states. Fletcher needs to figure out how to keep good teachers here.
If teachers go on strike, I'll be screwed out of my practicum hours for this semester. I don't know if we can be excused under that circumstance. If I have to stay an extra semester to make it up... I don't know WHAT I will do!

Where in the Constitution does it say that employers are required to provide health insurance? What a stupid idea! Why not require them to provide transportation for their employees? Or a clothing allowance? We need to release employers from this burden that keeps them from hiring new employees. Let everyone be responsible for their own health care.

I found out today that if the real strike is more than a couple of days that they will bring in subs and we'll be required to keep up with our hours. One student insisted that she had a union family and that she was NOT crossing the picket line.
She was told...then you will flunk. :)
But as a teacher, you DON'T work for a private company. You essentially work for the government and you are paid with TAX DOLLARS that come out of the pockets of the citizens. Government making profits? Surely you jest. Apples and oranges, my friend.
You conveniently ignore the fact that every demand you make is a request for the government to reach into the pocket of your friends, families, neighbors, and fellow citizens who are themselves struggling to meet their needs .
