Gov. Ernie Fletcher said yesterday that the Kentucky Education Association has "gone too far" by calling for an October strike unless the state improves the health-insurance plan for public school employees.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon, Fletcher urged the union to reconsider, and he said unless that happens, "it is inappropriate for me to negotiate in response to an illegal threat." -- The Courier-Journal
Hey folks, it's medical insurance. As long as we keep calling it "health" insurance then freeloaders will always think that coverage should include just about anything.

Maybe they can get rid of these union thugs and hire real teachers.
He should just do what Reagan did with the air traffic controllers and fire them all. Every single one of these teachers knew what they were getting into before they took the job. Where else can you get hired and then start demanding more pay/benefits...or else? The Unions need to get out of the public sector (especiallly within education where the quality of education ranks low on their priority list).

People in most states would rather spend tax money by building prisons than having a tax increase for your kids in school.
Yes, I am a teacher and a lot of the things at the state level with our union is stupid, but don't anyone dare say that fighting for health care is wrong. If I want health care through the school that I teach at, it would cost me $920 a month, YES a month.
And for the person who said that teachers know what you are getting into, remeber that when you don't get your raise or increase in your benefits.
Medical insurance is expensive, pay your own premiums. Reality check for institutional Dems who are now having to pay their own way through the quagmire that trial attorneys have created.

One thing is for sure: I will not be sending any children I may have in my lifetime to public schools if I can help it. The irrationality with the way these people are behaving in this incident indicates my children should not be in the care of such people.
Indeed--the KEA said nothing when Democrats blocked the effort to reform medical practice damages and has even endorsed and will no doubt spend hundreds of thousands on false, negative attacks on Republicans again this election cycle.
That is, they have endorsed the very people that blocked the efforts to lower health care costs. They don't want the underlying problem solved, as it makes a good campaign issue for the Democratic Party, of which the KEA is a wing of.

My school district is in wonderful financial shape because of the superintendent and also because we have sacrificed in previous contracts.
what we are asking for with our current contract will not even dip into the reserves that our district has, so why won't they settle.
If you were working for a company that made a profit last year, wouldn't you expect a raise? You helped that company make a profit, is it wrong for you to want to share in that?
Ok.. I will bite. Fighting for health care is wrong. Fighting for more benefits, more pay and more free time for working 9 months out of the year is wrong.
Most of your students are assholes too, aren't they?
I have a 5,250 deductable and pay 400 a month for an HSA that covers catestrophic 100% after I dump in 7,500 into the till. The rest of my bill are paid out of pocket (though its tax deductable thanks to Newt Gingrich).
I HAVE NO SYMPATHY.
