Bang List: What's your opinion of 12-gauge Flechettes?
SABOT DESIGNS LLC ^

Posted on 09/19/2004 10:45:45 AM PDT by SlickWillard

What do you thing of this ammunition?

Is it stable? Accurate? Lethal?

If you were PD/SWAT/Special Forces, would you use this ammunition in an "urban" anti-terrorism situation? [Assume your orders are something like "Maximize terrorist deaths while minimizing civilian deaths."]

Or are flechettes just a lot of fancy-schmantzy marketing gibberish?

Whether they're useful or not, they're certainly expensive. For instance, a single round of Federal 000 magnums [10 balls per shot] costs about $0.75:

Whereas a single round of Flechette Sabots [19 flechettes per shot] costs about $2.00:

So: Any thoughts about this ammunition?

Thanks!

If you really want to mess somebody up, dump out the shot and reload the shell with calcium carbide pellets.

I much prefer a 105 mm Howitzer or a 155 mm Howitzer shell of them. Bigger round more bang for the buck!

If you can see what you are shooting at,

then you are too close!

Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet; with a smile on your face and with love in your heart. That way, the civil suit the "alleged perp's" relatives bring against you, falls flat on its' ass face...

But that won't all fit on a tag line... ;-(

Would not waste my time or money with them.

I sent my barrel out to Vang Comp for their mods (lengthening the forcing cone, back-boring the barrel and porting the barrel) with the right flavor of 00buckshot (my gun prefers Federal LE Reduced Recoil), It will reliably put at least three pellets into a standard silhouette at 75 yards. Beyond that distance, there is a few slugs in the side saddle...Invest in some good sights, there are some good ghost-ring sights out there, and this has made my shooting much more accurate.

The reduced recoil stuff allows for amazingly fast follow up shots. I've used this gun, with the LE ammo, on whitetails in the swamps, and it will dispatch a deer right now out to 15 yards. I cannot vouch for longer distance though. As for armored foes, the expedient fellow would aim for the crotch.

What would you want as your ammunition?

I would want a rucksack full of Federal LE 00buck reduced recoil shells.

I see this a lot - people recommending 00 instead of 000.

What's the thinking - that the spread is too narrow with 000?

I believe it may just be market related, more than anything else...it is just more available. BTW, I did not notice anyone advocating #4 buck (.24" diameter). Federal makes a LE reduced recoil version of #4 buck that could have some promise in CQB situations...

IIRC these rounds were used in M79 rounds but were very impressive when used in canister rounds from a 105mm Howitzer and had tubes depressed so as to use in a direct fire mode against human wave attacks. I have read accounts of folks finding VC stapled to trees three feet off the ground in the aftermath of such attacks. I also know that tanks have access to such rounds for anti-infantry modes. I am however doubtful of their efficiency in such firearms as shotguns. It would seem to me that the triple ought buckshot would be more effective. If you're concerned about defeating body armor, use an accurate rifle and go for the head shot.

Actually, I think that Glaser has it as a point of pride that nobody has successfully challenged their prefrangible ammo in court.

Very nice choice in .45's. I carry a Para-ord LDA CCW model

I have just acquired a Sig P245 as my new standard carry gun. I have a Blade-Tech IWB and new MeproLight night sights and lots of MagSafe or RBCD ammo (at least two spare mags).

As we march toward our unknown destiny (the next 911) I firmly believe that someday soon, there will be a low tech terror attack with Jihadis in a mall using AK's and a lawfully armed citizen is going to shut it all down.

Serious guns for serious times.

Flechettes have a better chance of hitting the target than 000 when used in extremely dense foliage.
