Please tell me we're not going to try to protect Czeckoslovakia's sovereignty. I foresee us going to war with Nazi Germany somewhere down the road, and I don't look forward to that by any means. But, I'm not sure protecting Czeckoslovakia is worth that type of hellish war.

----Well stated, Prime Minister Chamberlain. With such wisdom, I'm sure we will have "peace in our time."

Hello, Jeff, how are you ? I read about your loss and I'm sure you know we all are with you in these sad moments.

The more info I read or hear about China, the more I'm led to think you're either some benevolent time-traveler or gifted with extraordinary prophetic powers...

My word, things are really getting "interesting" (in the Chinese meaning of this word) for us all. China moves her pieces all over the Great Game board : Venezuela, Sudan, Panama, the OAS, Taiwan...

But, I'm not sure protecting Taiwan (whom, if I'm not mistaken, we still don't officially recognize as a nation) is worth that type of hellish war.

You are correct that we don't recognize Taiwan as a nation, but rather, as a province of China. However, we have signed the Taiwan Relations Act.

It is the policy of the United States... to consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means, including by boycotts or embargoes, a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific area and of grave concern to the United States; to provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character; and to maintain the capacity of the United States to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, or the social or economic system, of the people on Taiwan.

If the United States were to stand by and let China takeover Taiwan by force, all of our treaty commitments would be called into question. What would Japan's reaction be? God help us if we allowed Taiwan and its 22 million people to fall under Communist rule. Taiwan has the 17th largest economy in the world, just behind Russia.

The Headline should read, China Promised to Invade in 5 Years.....it is not really a prediction if you have control over it.

I was going to say "China Plans to invade in 5 years. I predict (plan) that I will continue working for 5 years.

Mushrooms are right. Pretty mushrooms with a distinct smell to them.
2008 Olympics could be a good year for some Intel gathering when the whole country opens up to the free world. Hopefully by then, the Chinese will not disrupt the "made in taiwan" crap we all seem to buy once in a while!

Yeah, as China knows by now they would get owned so hard if they tried any troop assault. All we would have to do is provide a bubble over taiwan with our cruisers, subs, destroyers, and China couldn't do jack but run away as everything they have gets sunk or shot down.

By who? We're a little busy right now and we've also not shown anything to discourage China from invading Taiwan. And as soon as we do go over there Kim Chong Il will start spouting off about an American invasion and let off some nuclear test explosion.

"come on China, at least wait till after the Olympics in 2008..."

Or maybe they will launch the attack during the Olympics : suddenly they have hundreds of thousands of foreign hostages to bargain for...

China won't attack Taiwan unless provoked. This is a no win situation for everyone. The Taiwanese would be obliterated. The United States would be put in the position of fighting a defensive war if we intervened militarily. Mainland China would catch hell from most of the world while they are working hard to become part of it.

The Chinese catch a lot of hell (as they should) for their treatment of Tibet. That's a drop in the bucket of the problems resulting from an attack on Taiwan.

If I had to place a bet I think this will be a long, slow and sometimes jingoistic road toward some type of unification.

I dont think Taiwan personally, but Americans have troop deployment with military arsenal in and around Taiwan. China is surrounded, and all guns pointing.

Maybe Japan may boycott the Games, not the rest.Australia's foreign minister,Alexander Downer, publicly stated a few weeks back that his country would stay out of any war in the Straits ie they recognise China's position. The Asean nations are heavily trading with China-Singapore new PM stated that he recognises the 'one China' Policy.China has sold weaponry to Thailand & is trying to do the same to Malaysia & given Chinese clout in the region, none of them have raised a finger about Taiwan.South Korea's largest trading partner is China & Samsung,LG ,Hyundai make millions the mainland-why waste such money by morally supporting a pea sized island, which is losing economic relevance steadily(not a coincidence) -besides Seoul needs China to pull the strings in Pyongyang.China is too big a nation, militarily economically for the nations bordering it to act according to the way the US wishes them to.

China couldn't do jack but run away as everything they have gets sunk or shot down.

This is true. Taking an island that is well defended is much more difficult, militarily, than invading a region on the mainland, such as Vietnam.

Touche. You make a good point.

However, I think we have bigger fish to fry than China right now. Taiwan is not worth the trouble.
