N Korea says it blew up mountain

North Korea has given an explanation for the huge blast last Thursday which prompted speculation that it was a part of a nuclear test.

The country's foreign minister, Paek Nam Sun, said the blast was the deliberate demolition of a mountain as part of a hydro-electric project.

His remarks were in response to a call for information by the visiting UK Foreign Office minister, Bill Rammell.

North Korea had said absolutely nothing about the incident until now.

"This blast and the April blast on the train in North Korea both happened *very* close to the border with China."

For this very reason I doubt that this was some sort of nuclear test.

Seems that red china might not take too kindly to anybody setting off nukes right by it's border.

Anybody seen ol' Kim lately?

You make an excellent point. This definitely could have been a case of exploding hair. Imagine the fallout. Nasty.

This is from an article in October 2002. This blast was in the Yanggang province. You be the judge whether it was a nuclear blast.

2. US Suspected Sites of Nuclear Program
The US has indicated the Academy of Sciences near Pyongyang as being one of three sites where it suspects DPRK carried out uranium-enrichment tests in connection with its admitted secret nuclear program, a diplomatic source said Monday. The other two sites US mentioned are the Hagap region located in Hwicheon, Jagang Province, and Yeongjeo-dong in Yanggang Province, about 20km from the PRC border, according to the source.

There's a HINT in there for us...

No doubt this is part of the puzzle.

90% probabilities there was a pre-emptive attack on Taepodong Missile Base, possiblities that it was done by the North Korea resistance or an accident less than 10%. So the question is : who did it ? China, S.Korea/US/Japan or Russia ? On what are you basing the statement that it is a preemptive strike? How do you know they did not have an accident or something?
If it was a strike, All three of the Big Three would have to know about it and be in on it, Russia, US , and China.

When was the last time that such a type of accident happened ? Never before. If it wasn't a preemptive strike then there would be no need for the cover-up to go to these lengths. And yes, this is the ONE and ONLY case where theoretically Russia, US and China would agree.

They spend something like 25% of their GDP on the military. They don't have any domestic money for dams.

Yeah. Either that or this could be the reason.....

cause it's there. Or, cause it WAS there.

Yes, I agree hydro-electric power has some problems. Ignoring the risks of construction, which are true for any project (dams, nuclear power plants, tidal generators, etc.), the only risk to human life that hydro-electric generators pose is to those downstream if the dam is destroyed. In some cases, even this is not a risk (e.g,. if the hydro-electric facilities were destroyed

Russia set to boost North Korea's power supplies

North Korean negotiators said at recent talks in Beijing that one price for freezing their nuclear-bomb program would be obtaining fuel supplies from other countries to provide 2 million kilowatts of power a year.

I think the reported numbers dead from the April explosion are too low by at least an order of magnitude. Officially, I think the NKs admit to only 150 or some such. If you've looked closely at the pics available from that event, there's no way it's that small a number.

I'm not going to argue the NK explanation. Kerry jumped on the event (I suppose he assumed a nuke) to attribute a 'massive failure' in the President's policy. Thread Now let's see how he explains his remarks.
