PYONGYANG, North Korea - DPRK leader Kim Jong Il broke North Korea's silence Sunday on the explosion detected in its northern province of Ryanggang, resulting in a mushroom cloud over two miles in diameter. "In view of the danger we face in sharing the globe with an aggressor such as the United States," read Kim Jong on KCNA, "We felt we could no longer sit at the negotiating table while our enemies prepared for invasion on our soil. To prove our sincerity as well as our might, we launched this test of our nuclear arsenal. Let the world take note, and take heed."

It's not the Onion, but sort of a Bent onion. Maybe a green onion.

I had to read it and check it out before I made a "serious" comment.

But I would like to know what the real story on the explosion is.

"Kim Jong Il is full of crap."

Yeah, really. Who does this guy think he is—Dan Rather?

It's possible (though unlikely) that this was a calibration test of a large mass of conventional explosives, in preparation for a nuke test. It is not possible that this was an actual nuclear explosion—even assuming our government would keep that secret, there are too many independent scientists out there looking for precisely such an event for it to have been covered up.

Who is "The Bentinel"?

I think it's owned by Ron Vibbentrop.

Does Kim Young II try to dupe the U.S. into something to provide John Kerry an opening?
We immediately would have to swallow Kerry's wailing of having reacted without sufficient notice and consultation with the U.N.

how much empty land do they have anyway?

A more important question would be, how much land will they have in the future?

Either the good guys are conspiring to shush everything up to minimize public hysteria

Always a possibility. The last thing we want is another black eye for our intelligence community.

This could be real. Them setting off that much conventional explosives is not too credible and would be a huge waste of resources in a country that doesn't waste anything.

Not according to the US.

If true,

this tells me the U.S. has already tested that mushroom cloud and the atmosphere for radioactive traces.

Kim Jong Il is Ill.

"All triplets in North Korea are being forcibly removed from parents after their birth and dumped in bleak orphanages. The policy is carried out on the orders of Stalinist dictator Kim Jong-il, who has an irrational belief that a triplet could one day topple his regime. "

Nukes in the sub-kiloton range (<1/20 Hiroshima, nuclear artillery) can be detected by seismographs around the world.

This lends credence to the theory that an outside agency entered North Korea and purposely sabotaged the site, thought to be a nuclear weapons research facility. "That would be an awful shame," said Powell, when asked about the possibility, "But it was a fairly inexpensive operation.

Geez, did Powel speculate about the number of guys involved in the operation we had nothing to do with and don't know anything about, except that if it did happen, it was on time and under budget?

I don't think of the North Korean system as being all that frugal. They've been wasting their number one resource for over half a century now.

Duly noted, Thanks. Still, it must have been very powerful. I'm surprised no seismographs registered.

Oh, that's really bright. Take every set of triplets born in DPRK and infuse them with a lifelong grudge against Kim. Talk about 'self-fulfilling prophesy'.

Hopefully there are some grown-up North Korean triplets who are zeroing in on Wacky Kim as we speak, and it'll be over soon.

Considering they are north Koreans, what resource would that be?
