Who produced these documents???
CBS? The Kerry campaign? MoveOn.org? The White House? The mafia?
The Joker in your card deck has the wrong face, or the wrong caption. That's Ted Koppel, not Dan Rather.
My thoughts:
No kid did it.
The person(s) that created the documents reviewed in detail other documents in a way that the wording found on the forged ones would be believable. They new photoshop fairly well, but not well enough I guess.
They knew how to get them to CBS. Media connections.
Desperation not only prompted these memos to be created, but also fooled the creator(s) into thinking they would pass the smell test.
The timing of the memos is suspect. At the very same time the Move-On brigade is out running the anti-Bush National Guard ads out come these memos. There are no coincidences in politics. Smile.
Based on the content of the memos, I would say (hope) the WH must have known they were forged, and like a parent to a child, okay'd the release knowing someone would get burned.
More than someone actually, because this hits hard at the Media, the left's 527 effort and Kerry campaigns.

Nothing is sillier than the Rove stuff. He works for Bush. Every visceral motive he has is tempered for this President's historically acute sensibilities. They're a fine fine partnership.
Why is any one surprised that something like this has happened? I can't believe that they didn't do it sooner and I can't believe they were so STOOOPID...Whoever was responsible was very smart giving them to CBS, Blather is over the HILL and has lots of control.
BTW I heard it was his 5th grade Grandaughter who did the background checks on the documents, her web search said they were real.

Is it possible that CBS and Dan Rather knew that these docs were not authentic but thought if they aired it like it was truth, enough damage would be done that any "apology" afterwards would be an oversight to most people? Any thoughts on this?

I imagine that whoever did this may not have even been born in 1972, much less have any idea about typewriters. I mean, we're looking at a 34 year span here. Typewriters to these "kids" are probably like whatever was before reel-to-reels are to us.
They were lazy. They didn't do their research or they were simply too desperate and panicked to do it good enough. Knowing their probable political leaning, I'd have to say this is the result of laziness, elitism, and publik skooling.

They are all over at DU. Go read their posts. It is hillarious. Some have gone to great lengths to point out that they are real while the rest of them are in a tizzy over some Rove conspiracy theory.
