I agree with you except for this part:
No kid did it. I imagine that whoever did this may not have even been born in 1972, much less have any idea about typewriters. I mean, we're looking at a 34 year span here. Typewriters to these "kids" are probably like whatever was before reel-to-reels are to us.
They were lazy. They didn't do their research or they were simply too desperate and panicked to do it good enough. Knowing their probable political leaning, I'd have to say this is the result of laziness, elitism, and publik skooling.
