Democrats taking a chance on ``Fortunate Son'' criticism of Bush Guard records
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/9/04 | RON FOURNIER

Posted on 09/09/2004 4:58:56 PM PDT by alydar

The DNC has nicknamed its effort "Operation Fortunate Son" after a Creedence Clearwater Revival anti-war anthem from the 1960s. The song speaks of the privileged few, "born silver spoon in hand," who send others to war.

"The president has repeatedly insisted he did not receive any special treatment to get into the (Texas Air National) Guard. We now know this isn't true," Harkin said.

"We now know this was not true," he later added. "And the president also knows, and knew, this is not true."

That is Harkin BS. One idjit guest on FOX news said that the White House had not refuted that. I think it was on John Gibson's show. I heard that Bush has said that his Dad did NOT try to exert influence to get Bush in the TANG. Gibson just let it slide. I couldn't believe he let it go.

Further, this WHOLE dang thing with Bush's honorable service in TANG is a diversion. The Kerry campaign (and CBS and other Kerry supporters) are trying to divert attention to the FACTS surrounding Kerry and his FRAUD in Viet Nam and his "Service" as an anti-War activist while he was STILL ACTIVE in the military and afterward. What a crock of a setup if you ask me.

I am a Las Vegan so I love gambling metaphors!

And one of my fave old Abbott & Costello routines is in Buck Rrivates where Bud thinks Lou doesn't know how to play craps and Bud is set to swindle him, but increasingly it becomes clear that Lou knows much more than he is letting on. "A Little Joe!!!" ;-)

I saw Pat that night. I thought you were calling ME Sasso!

I think they are just throwing anything and everything at the wall to see if it would stick.

The bloggers and FR mavens are so quick to debunk this stuff, I thought they would appreciate a head's up!

Missle cruiser, actually, not a frigate.

If you were on a bird farm, then to you everything was a support ship, and every other ship was a "little guy." LOL.

I was on a Destroyer myself, '81-'83. We steamed with the Gridley quite often. From your time frame, '93-'97, I'm not surprised that you never heard of her. She was decommissioned in the early nineties (not sure exactly when). She was a good ship. I was APPALLED to learn that Kerry served on her.

Was there a book by Chesty Puller's son by the name of "Fortunate Son?" I read the book. I think that was the title.

Yep, that's it. Damn good book too.

re: The rest of the time was on the Gridley. which if I remember correct was a support ship.

Frigate (FF) or DD, i.e. a small combatant, not a support ship.

But the record has been clearly established that (a) Kerry had, and used college deferrments, (b) he requested another to study in France (e.g. both preserving "political viability", as with Clinton, while being near the heart of the anti-War/"peace" talk action), (c)his request was denied and his draft number was low (believe in the 20's), so he was going to Vietnam one way or the other, (d) he "volunteered" for the Navy as a means of avoiding ground combat, (e) got good Fitreps as a "stash" Ensign, but was either unhappy with shipboard duty or his ship was unhappy with him, so he (f) volunteered for what he understood was the equivalent of an overseas Coast Guard type job as the detached Commanding Officer of a small boat (big political viability points!), only to find to his horror (g) he was screwed.. the Swifties were ordered to patrol inland rivers, in the heart of the action in enemy territory. Shortly after his assignment, he received 3 Purple Hearts in 4 months, plus a few other gedunk metals (i.e. yes, for valor under combat, but since he wrote the narratives and went around the chain of command, they could be suspect as forgeries.. i.e. WHO ENDORSED THE RECOMMENDATION's after his immediate C.O. refused to?!!!), and he was out of hell ("bye crew...don't ya wish you were a smart as me..") in a heartbeat.

Truthfully, I cared little about Kerry's war record, and took it at face value, after all it was the official Navy record.. I even gave him a pass on "Winter Soldier".. i.e. we were all young and foolish back then. Then, as the truth came out about his Vietnam "heroism", the metals, early out from his tour of duty, his left-wing voting record, his connections to the Sandinistas in the 80's, I got furious about this fraud, about this lying piece of Gigelo trash.

"Unfit for Command", to say the least.

I thought that folks might enjoy see the fowl mouthed DU's debating among themsevles over fonts, and various models of IBM selectric typewriters. This caused a bit of a stire over there as well.

Link to DU asking its members to see what all the font nonsense was over at FreeRepublic and the consternation that followed

They are questioning his character, his honor, his truthfulness, and his integrity.

Yup and I believe Dung Heap questioned three of the four today. If these documents turn out to be forgeries, we MUST demand that Harkin apologize to the President of the United States on the Senate floor. This should not stand.

I don't know but the DUmmies are salivating all over this one!

George Bush joined the Texas Air National Guard in May, 1968 and Barnes was not elected Lt. Governor until 1969.

Bush's enlistment in 1968 per MSNBC and the rest is in Barnes' bio (Barnes is coincidentally a long-time Dem activist and one of Kerry's top fund-raisers).

I had that tune in my head when I first read the title.

In case anyone is listening...John Kerry, sign the 180. You can show us your records. We will be sensitive and gentle with you. Promise.

I find it fitting that Kerry served on a "frigate".

John Frigate Kerry. I guess we know what the "F" stands for now.

They also ignore the fact that he has previously said that no one influenced him, under oath, I believe.

I was telling Sinkspur and Alydar that their new "hot" thread details an apparent failure on GWB's Nat'l Guard app. to disclose an "arrest" by Yale campus police for participating in a post-football game "riot" and how this will torpedo his re-election campaign and probably land him in jail.

No joke!!!
