New Questions On Bush Guard Duty

CBS) The military records of the two men running for president have become part of the political arsenal in this campaign – a tool for building up, or blowing up, each candidate’s credibility as America's next commander-in-chief.

While Sen. Kerry has been targeted for what he did in Vietnam, President Bush has been criticized for avoiding Vietnam by landing a spot in the Texas Air National Guard - and then failing to meet some of his obligations.

Did then-Lt. Bush fulfill all of his military obligations? And just how did he land that spot in the National Guard in the first place? Correspondent Dan Rather has new information on the president’s military service – and the first-ever interview with the man who says he pulled strings to get young George W. Bush into the Texas Air National Guard.

...

But 60 Minutes has obtained a number of documents we are told were taken from Col. Killian's personal file. Among them, a never-before-seen memorandum from May 1972, where Killian writes that Lt. Bush called him to talk about "how he can get out of coming to drill from now through November."

Lt. Bush tells his commander "he is working on a campaign in Alabama…. and may not have time to take his physical." Killian adds that he thinks Lt. Bush has gone over his head, and is "talking to someone upstairs."

Col. Killian died in 1984. 60 Minutes consulted a handwriting analyst and document expert who believes the material is authentic.

---This one could accomplish KERNING, I believe.---

It's very ingenious but it won't kern.

The Selectric had proportional fonts.

Only the Selectric Composer, which was extremely rare, and a bitch to use, as well.

No way would a NG unit have one, or have anybody willing to put up with it.

Dan Blather will never tell us he was in possession of forged documents. Honesty, and integrity doesn't exist any longer in the MSM.

I'm not 100% sure about this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a copy back then have been made on a mimeograph unless Killian had multiple copies typed? If reproduced on mimeo the text should be purple/blue and not black. Also, why would the original or even a copy of the original have toner blotches? Surely if these records are authentic the 1st generation document exists and junky photocopies have not replaced it....

Something is rotten in Denmark!

"Kerry's DD-214, posted on his web site uses a proportional typewriter in some, but not all, fields."

AHA! Does this mean that we have another potential forgery to investigate? Why would the Navy type a 214 with 2 font-spacing styles?

My DD-214 (AUG 70 USAF) was typed in one style, with no proportional spacing or kerning. Perhaps the Freeper investigators may want to look at Mr. kerry's form 214 more closely.

Over 900 posts on this thread alone! Not bad, my friends. This has been an historic day for FR.

It could be, but a DD215 was initiated to correct his DD214 in the 90's so it's more likely that DOD has simply modernized it's equipment since the original.

After Bush wins reelection, congress should open hearings into the media bias. I know this sounds controversial, but it has to happen. This is an open attempt to influence the election by the press. It violates the election laws and the spirit of the election laws.

Dan Rather will be brought down just as history has brought down McCarthy.

I think to myself, what if a real expert had created a fake document that really did appear real. Wow how do we know anything we see and hear is real anymore?

Lights out, good night.

It could be, but a DD215 was initiated to correct his DD214 in the 90's so it's more likely that DOD has simply modernized it's equipment since the original.

Among the fields in proportional font are the following:

Information in monospace includes things like name, marital status, major field, place of birth, etc.

Much of the information in the proportional font is stuff that one might use a lot, and which--if one was a poor typist--one might want to rubber-stamp. I wouln't think rubber stamps would work well with the ubiquitous carbons, though, and find myself a bit impressed with the size and detail of some stamps like the "remarks" column (the zero and the "NONE" indications would appear to be part of the stamp, if it was one). It would also seen odd that "SINGLE" (under marital status) wouldn't merit a stamp.

I don't know if the use of proportional fonts for the common text indicates anything, but it does seem a little odd. Of course, it's possible that's because I'm a good enough typist that it would be easier to type some of those things than use a stamp; that might not have been true for everyone.

In addition to the form proving a fogery, the content proves a forgery.

I think you are right.

LOLOL! Man, that Geraldo.

FOX News really got the short end of the stick when they took him in from CNN.

Man, it's been a while. Almost certain it was CNN, right?

He's more suited for them than with FOX. Maybe they'll send him back! :^D

believe me- Rush knows all about it. Listen to him today. He has been seeing the same sources we have and has surely dug up some more and tested the typing himself.

This morning I came into the office and saw that AP has changed their story and their explosive headline. Now that serious questions have been raised about the memo hoax, the AP "fixed" the story. How? By beginning it with trashing Bush because 2 times it took him 2 passes to land an F-102A fighter on March 12 and April 10, 1972. THEN they lead into what at least raises some doubt about the story:

Meanwhile, questions were raised Thursday about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos purporting to have been written by one of Bush's commanders in 1972 and 1973. The memos, which were publicized by CBS News on its "60 Minutes" program, say Bush ignored a direct order from a superior officer and lost his status as a Guard pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam. . . .

Weasels.

"I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old."

Running through a copier several times isn't even necessary. Some funky new TrueType fonts look exactly like old typewriter type, faded and aged, e.g. "X Files".

Actually, don't use MS Word! All they had to do was pick up an old Underwood portable. The government must have bought a million of them. Here's one on Ebay. It's not quite the right model but it would do.
