NEWARK, N.J. -- Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry has lost his double-digit lead over President George W. Bush in New Jersey and is nearly tied with the GOP incumbent, according to a new poll.

Bush, coming off his party's national convention, slashed Kerry's lead among Garden State voters to 4 percentage points, according to a Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers Poll released Thursday. <a href="http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-nj--bush-kerry-poll0909sep08,0,3304612.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire>Full Story</a>. Well, at least some of this lead isn't due to anything Bush did, but due to the corruption and things that McGreevy has done.

If McGreevy continues to fight to stay in office to keep a new governor from being elected when he leaves, and public opinion continues to move more and more against him, he's going to hand the state to Bush in November....

Mark my words, NJ will see some serious amounts of Republican's put into office in November thanks to McGreevy.

If you see NJ seriously move to Bush in a big way, National Dems will be walking up the Governor Mansion steps telling him its time to go. Kerry cannot win if NJ goes R... its impossible.. .he's barely in a position where he "could" win now.

That is hard to prove since the current candidate is about as lame as I have ever seen and his running mate, Tinkerbelle, does not help with the gravitas.

F is for fuhgeddaboudit! Good to see it, especially after all the crud I took earlier this year for saying NJ would be a lot closer than people think.

Which, in the end, is an indication of the beginnings of a rout. I sure hope that Ketchup/Breck spend money inb Jersey; it would mean less commercials here in Wisconsin :-)

You didn't mention it, so I will; this is the first time since the 4/14 ECB Update that the ECB has an outright win for Bush (with leans).

Exactly. I don't think W can win NJ (great if he can though) but this will divert some of Kerry's money away from Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, and PA.

The money will still flow into Philly (it serves southern Jersey), but I'll be happy to see the money leave Wisconsin.

You didn't get that "crud" from me :)

I'm on record as far back as last year saying Bush would get at least 320 EVs and now I'm thinking I could be fairly low.

Is this for real??

Yes. Supposedly the NJ polls showed a sharp narrowing following the McGreevey outing and subsequent refusal to step down. I believed it was true after watching so many Dems start calling on McG to get out. And I'm sure Dubya's overall rallying didn't hurt, either. :-)

I think even with this bounce Bush is still down in the electoral college.

Okay, you keep on believing that.

Unless the red Republican blue Democrat color scheme has become ingrained since the last election the colors will reverse this time since blue was supposedly for the incumbant party. So go blue this time.

If the people of NJ had any brains and guts, they would flush every incumbent poltician from office in the next election, because they stood idly by while Jim McGreedy placed the security of the people of NJ SECONDARY TO HIS PERSONAL INTERESTS!

It's gonna be party time all over the country if Dubya can utterly destroy sKerry and his minions. Such a thrashing would have very, very long term consequences - even more significant than the Reagan and Bush'41 wins.

The more people get to know Kerry, the more they like Bush.

Think you nailed it. Kerry's biggest bounces have come when he was nowhere to be seen. The more exposure he gets the worse he looks. Bring it on!

The Clintonistas who sabotaged Kerry's camp last week, grooming Kerry for a loss, clearing the field for Hillary in 2008 is also real.

It's a dangerous game, though. If they sabotage Kerry too much, Bush can focus on building a lasting GOP majority instead of just winning the election.

WSJ usually teams up with solidly reputable folks.

I continue to be amazed that they are clients/ team members with Zogby, who has a very spotty record at best.

Zogby DID do cutting edge work ten or so years ago, but now he is a pretty clearly partisan also ran in the polling business.

As I understand it, it is too late for McGreevy to go in order to get a governor race on the ballot. That makes it too late for the Demodogs to defuse the difficulties they have because of him in NJ. The corruption issue will remain, and everyone realizes this. The "party leaders" tried last month, and failed - and now NJ --> Bush.

It's good to see a solid Kerry state go into the tossup or lean Kerry category. If this pattern continues, Kerry is going to have to use money to defend NJ, which is less money that can be used in OH or FL.

Recall previous reports that the sKerry campaign has blocked ad time for the next two months. They can't change their blocks of time now. They will have to use some sort of reserve money to advertise in states like NJ and dare I say .... California!

This is a huge error.

In voting for a president on economic issues one has to ask one's self ... if the sKerry campaign can't run their advertising budget properly to deal with major changes in the polls, then how in the hell can they handle the ever changing economy of a nation of some 290 million people!

You think so? I think they are actually quietly sabotaging this guy for She Who Must Not Be Named

Come to think of it, they don't seem to be helping Kerry much. Maybe the Kitty Kelly rag was designed to try and hurt Bush but REALLY hurt Kerry instead.
