The John F. Kerry for President campaign and Kerry supporters took aim at First Lady Laura Bush today, claiming in a new book by Kitty Kelly that Laura Bush both sold and smoked marijuana during her days at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. This explosive new allegation signals a new strategy by Kerry supporters to target not only President Bush with charges of drug use in his past, but the First Lady as well.
A newly coordinated strategy by the The Kerry camp will begin this week with week-long media appearances by Kitty Kelly (author of "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," which makes these shocking charges) and Kerry Campaign Vice-Chairman and former Democratic Leiutenant Governor of Texas Ben Barnes. Barnes will charge that he used his influence as Speaker of the Texas House to uncharacteristically get known political opponent and long-time Republican George H.W. Bush's son a job with the Texas National Guard in order to avoid serving in Vietnam.
Another phase of the Kerry strategy involves a relatively new pro-Kerry 527 group called "Texans for Truth" which plans to launch an ad this week in which a lieutenant colonel in the Alabama Air National Guard questions Bush's absence from his National Guard service in Montgomery, Ala. The group says it plans to spend about $100,000 to run the ad.
The ad asks "Was George W. Bush AWOL in Alabama?" and implores: "Tell us whom you served with Mr. President."
This new and well-coordinate Democratic effort to resurrect charges made several times in the past four years signals a U-turn in the Kerry campaign, going back to charges made during the Democratic Convention by DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe that President Bush was "AWOL" during his Texas Guard service, an allegedly treasonous act. Criticized by fellow Democrats for not being harsh enough, Kerry supporters have unloaded these allegations this week against First Lady Laura Bush and the President in the hopes of damaging the personal credibility of the First Couple.
Charges of prior drug abuse by Laura and George Bush, as well as allegations of treason against the President, will dominate the Democratic talking-points this week with the intent of showing that the Kerry camp is getting serious about going on the offensive in this campaign.
I have heard rumors that the book will also say that Bush is a "flaming homosexual".
"Man, is this going to backfire on them"
Are we sure?
I honestly don't care if Laura DID deal drugs in college. No, I don't believe she did, but if she did, then I look at her as a shining example of God's grace. She is a wonderful example of the kind of first lady our country needs today.
"Kerry camp is getting serious"
Honest to goodness, I am laughing so hard my eyes are watering. How serious can one be taken with the image of Laura Bush being the campus drug dealer at SMU?
She's actually pretty nutty.
I read a Vanity Fair article about her (Pravda for Demmies), and even they couldn't smooth her out.
This is not even PARTIALLY believable. What a lame attempt to slander the First Lady and the President. Kitty must have been on something to have written such slop.
Totally unbelievable.
Presuming she did smoke marijuana, in college:
She and her husband eventually GREW UP. They took on post 60s values and ideas.
Kerry, on the other hand, is locked in the 60s.
Why hire an anti-war kandidate, for a war?
The Packers were girlie men. ;)
Yes, Kelley has made a good living, however, people looovvveee Nancy Reagan now more than ever, so she is not successful when it comes to damaging the image of her subject.
Kerry supporters: no such thing. They are nothing but Bush bashers, all who "hate" this man, and don't even know why, but just follow blindly and obliviously.
The Dems are resorting to their best weapon--aesthetics of the absurd. If you can picture what they described, you have either a tenuous link to reality or you are Carville.
These are various storylines from Dallas.
I kid you not.
Signs of a desperate campaign if you ask me. They are taking on more water than the Titanic and grasping at straws. It's really quite pathetic.
". If you can picture what they described, you have either a tenuous link to reality or you are Carville."
No need to be redundant, Mr. Whale. ;)
Get these low lifes on O 'Reilly. If they are telling the truth we'll know.
nick
Yeah, Kerry and his Kampaign are offensive all right!
Mabye we should be trying out here brownie recipe instead of her cookie recipe?
hehehehehehe...
Regardless, wake me up when they find 264 former SMU students who are all willing to testify under oath that they have personally witnessed LB smoke and/or sell reefer.
BTW, just for the record, I would be disappointed if LB didn't smoke pot in college. The real question is whether she sold high quality stuff with a good count at a fair price.
Lastly, if you want the allegation about GWM snorting coke to go away, then someone needs to find a tape of his brother Roger -- I mean Jeb -- saying something like "my brother Bill -- I mean George -- had a nose like a vacuum cleaner."
