Why would they prepare an advance obit for Donald Regan? He wasn't important enought for more than 30 seconds when he died in 2003.

MSNBC almost simultaneously was preparing a video package of the former president's obituary -- just in case. Fox News did the same thing, except every third clip was "I did not...have...sexual...relations...with that woman, Miss Lewinsky..."

I work for a network (I won't mention the name) in sports and I once saw a practice drill special report on our TV screens that the pope had died. The obituary was very complete and it even had a picture with "John Paul II 1920-2003" on top.

All, I repeat, ALL news gathering and reporting organizations do this on a regular basis.
This is not unusual, nor something to be concerned about.

I bet a lot of alternate endings are written all of the time. Pick (a) or (b)... its getting popular in the movies, too. It enables the "news" to get out more quickly.
Its nothing new--remember the famous picture of Harry Truman smiling and holding up the paper with the headline "Dewey Beats Truman?"
