Kerry's Leaky Dinghy
mens daily news ^ | September 6, 2004 | Jim Manion

Posted on 09/06/2004 8:23:41 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

It appears that John Kerry has realized his campaign is quickly taking on water. Even members of his own party sent out the claxon call reported in a September 5, 2004 New York Times article that the "Minnow would be lost". What is truly amazing is that these Democratic heavyweights went on the record to voice their concerns. The scramble for life vests has started.

While the source of the leak is subject to speculation (from the torpedoes launched by the Swift Boat Vets, to the lack of substance of the Candidate himself, to President Bush's strong speech at the Republican National Convention last week), Kerry has sent out an urgent plea for all hands on deck.

As the water level has risen dramatically in both recent Time and Newsweek polls, Kerry has drafted some additional muscle to help him bail water. He needs it.

It doesn't help that erstwhile crewmembers recruited as deck hands on the SS Kerry have turned out to be nothing more than expensive ballast. Sandy Berger became unable to move, anchored by classified documents stuffed into his shorts and socks. Joe Wilson turned into a pillar of salt when the 9/11 Commission effectively exposed his tall tales in his attempts to discredit the Bush Administration of lying about Saddams attempts to obtain yellowcake from Niger. Kerry's running mate has effectively done a superb imitation as a heavy anchor, and will certainly be swept off deck when he meets Dick Cheney in a Vice Presidential Debate. But he will do so with good hair. Mamma T. has been bailing water into the boat, not out of it.

The plan to use leaky Dixie cups to bail water crafted by the remaining crew was not cutting it. Their idea of Kerry confronting the Swift Boat controversy was to ignore the issues and blame Bush for being mean, resurrecting the mantra of the "vast right wing conspiracy" force-fed to the American public during the 8 years of the Clinton Administration. Having the other Senator from Massachusetts as a member of the loyal crew has not had the impact expected. It is not a good idea to include someone who cannot swim aboard a leaky vessel.

Or having the Candidate state that he would have still voted to authorize the use of force against Iraq while attempting to distinguish himself from the President by claiming he would have forced the terrorists into a sensitive pillow fight rather than rolling into Baghdad did nothing to stem the rising water level. While a pillow fight approach may have swayed the French to join us, it does not work with the American public. And holding a midnight rally after the end of the RNC which bordered on a Howard Dean moment certainly did little to turn the tide of American opinion, the waves of which are starting to lap over the sides of the Democrat's boat.

And the Democratic Candidate's crew is steering his vessel directly into a brewing storm which is threatening to swamp the Good Ship Lollipop. A fellow Democratic Senator who serves as a keynote speaker at your opponent's nominating convention is the political equivalent of "Red Sky in Morning Sailors Take Warning". And having a former Democratic mayor of New York City openly supporting a Republican Candidate for President is a falling barometer.

So Kerry has sent out the SOS to two old political shipmates: Thomas Vallely and John Sasso.

Thomas Vallely will take on the role of trying to stop the Swift Vets damaging volleys. According to the September 13 Issue of Newsweek: "Thomas Vallely is the leader of the pack of vets that Kerry calls his dog-hunters, a group that has beaten back the attacks on his Vietnam record since his first Senate race 20 years ago." Kerry hopes that his crew of "dog hunters" will keep him from doing the doggie paddle. What worked in a Senate election in the liberal state of Massachusetts may backfire in a national forum. And the Swift Vets have a big head start on the Dog Squad.

And Kerry hopes that John Sasso, Kerry's General Election Manager at the Democratic National Committee will become a shadow to his current campaign manager, Mary Beth Cahill. It is Kerry's expectation that Sasso can use his "sharp elbows" to stop the leaking Kerry attributes to the Republicans. The wisdom of bringing Sasso on to help is somewhat puzzling. Sasso was the Campaign Manager for Michael Dukakis'in his 1988 Presidential run. Sasso is currently 0-1 in Presidential Campaigns facing opponents with the last name of Bush. Perhaps the theory is that Sasso's prior experience with Dukakis' Titanic loss will allow Kerry to navigate his leaking boat through the looming campaign storms.

Kerry even stooped to drag Bill Clinton out of sick bay over the weekend and accepted Clinton's offer to unleash the Democrats' rabid pit bull on steroids, James Carville. Carville, along with Clinton shipmates Paul Begala and Stanley Greenberg, will take up defensive positions to repel all boarders.

Kerry is desperately trying to save his little ship. The wisdom of the new course he has set is yet to be seen. But a leaking dinghy generally does not fare well in a hurricane. Kerry's actions are a strong indication that his hopes of sailing the Ship of State are slipping. And it is looking more and more likely that Kerry will have to give the order to abandon ship late in the evening on November 2.

I don't get to listen to Rush (I'm at work in the afternoon) but I heard he did a very funny Gilligan's Island song of the Kerry campaign, including the words:

"The billionaire... is his wife ..."

Gossip question of the week: Will Mama T and JF'nK stay happily married if he is soundly thrashed in November?

We need to insist that Kerry give permission for ALL of his military, medical, and tax records to be released. He is one sick puppy. It's long past time that we can take him at his word or rely on him to choose which snippets of his records should be released.

We STILL don't have clinton's medical or educational records in the public domain.

Whatever happened to investigative reporting? How come these reports just can't manage to investigate a Democrat? They can't even seem to locate Kerry's senatorial record.

Does anyone know if the Swiftvets are going to kick back into gear again? They were mighty effective, and the results were swift. I hope they haven't finished.

Leaky Dinghy

I'm going to refrain from making a "Depends" joke. Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent.

It appears that Kerry is once again beaching his campaign "swiftboat", this time on the rocks.

Republican campaign advisors, so far, are missing the boat entirely. They are using the same old, tired commercials. The RNC ran a magnificent convention. Why not a magnicient campaign? We need some NEW ads desperately. Has anyone seen one?

So Kerry has sent out the SOS to two old political shipmates: Thomas Vallely and John Sasso

The name Vallely rattles around my mind, but John Sasso is nothing more than a political hitman. He is the most notorious political assassin in Massachusetts.
